In this new collection of poems, D\u00e9Lana R. A.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Dameron<\/strong> maps a journey across emotional,\u00a0<\/span>spiritual, and geographic lines, from the familiarity\u00a0<\/span>of the honeysuckle South to a new world, or a new\u00a0<\/span>kingdom\u2014Harlem. Her poems traverse the streets\u00a0<\/span>of this Black mecca with a careful eye cast toward\u00a0<\/span>the intimacies of the exterior. Still, as the poems\u00a0<\/span>move throughout the built environment, they\u00a0<\/span>navigate matters of death, love, love loss, and\u00a0<\/span>family against the backdrop of a city that has yet to\u00a0<\/span>become home.\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed what looms over this weary\u00a0<\/span>kingdom is a longing for the certainties of a lover’s\u00a0<\/span>touch, the summer’s sun, and the comforts of a promised land up North. And as the poet longs, so\u00a0<\/span>do readers. Ultimately they grow aware of Utopia’s fragility.<\/span><\/p>\n

A native of Columbia, South Carolina<\/strong>, D\u00e9Lana R. A. Dameron is a writer and an arts and culture\u00a0<\/span>administrator living in Brooklyn, New York<\/strong>. Dameron’s debut collection, How God Ends Us<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>(University of South Carolina Press), was selected by Elizabeth Alexander<\/strong> for the 2008 South\u00a0<\/span>Carolina Poetry Book Prize. Dameron holds an M.F.A. in poetry from New York University and\u00a0<\/span>a B.A. in history from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
