{"id":46727,"date":"2018-06-06T15:05:53","date_gmt":"2018-06-06T21:05:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=46727"},"modified":"2018-06-05T09:39:23","modified_gmt":"2018-06-05T15:39:23","slug":"monday-movies-series-kicks-off-june-11-with-oxford-film-fest-and-burns-belfry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/monday-movies-series-kicks-off-june-11-with-oxford-film-fest-and-burns-belfry\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Movies Series Kicks Off June 11 with Oxford Film Fest and Burns Belfry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">On June 11, <em><strong>A Conversation with My Black Son<\/strong><\/em> will be featured as a part of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">the free <strong>Monday Movies<\/strong> screenings presented by the <strong>Oxford Film Festival<\/strong>, which will take place\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">at the <strong>Burns-Belfry Museum &amp; Multicultural Center<\/strong>, located at 710 Jackson Avenue East.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The screening will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, and includes a talk with the <strong>Oxford\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Development Association<\/strong> (ODA), which has worked to ensure that the future of the historic\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">property that is Burns-Belfrey remains intact. The film will be presented with a guest speaker\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">and will be free to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The short film from<strong> Geeta Gandbhir<\/strong> and <strong>Blair Foster<\/strong> originally premiered on PBS on February\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">12 and chronicles the dreaded \u201cconversation\u201d black parents must have with their young sons\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">about how to handle race in America, especially due to disproportionate targeting and profiling\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">by the police. The film is intended to foster a conversation about race relations in the United\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">States, says its filmmakers Gandbhir and Foster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The program is provided free due to generous support from the <strong>Mississippi Humanities Council<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Oxford Film Festival was founded in 2003 to bring exciting, new, and unusual films (and the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">people who create them) to North Mississippi. The annual five-day festival screens short and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">feature-length films in both showcase and competition settings. The festival is a 501c3 not-for-\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">profit organization.
