{"id":46340,"date":"2018-05-07T15:20:36","date_gmt":"2018-05-07T21:20:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=46340"},"modified":"2018-05-07T15:20:36","modified_gmt":"2018-05-07T21:20:36","slug":"oxford-rocks-local-youth-hold-spring-concert-may-10-at-the-lyric-theater","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/oxford-rocks-local-youth-hold-spring-concert-may-10-at-the-lyric-theater\/","title":{"rendered":"Oxford Rocks: Local Youth Hold Spring Concert May 10 at The Lyric Theater"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Roxford University<\/strong> opened its doors in 2015 with the intent of giving the youth of <strong>Oxford, Mississippi<\/strong>, the opportunity to learn to play in a rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">As part of Roxford\u2019s curriculum, students participate in the December and spring showcases. This year\u2019s Roxford <strong>Spring Showcase<\/strong> will be held at <strong>The Lyric Theater<\/strong> on May 10 at 7 pm. <strong>Tad Wilkes<\/strong>, a.k.a. <strong>Moon Pie Curtis<\/strong>, spoke with us about launching the university and why the showcases are so important to the students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cTwo friends of mine, Carter and Lydia Myers, had seen similar concepts when they were traveling and decided they wanted to try something like that in Oxford,\u201d said Wilkes. \u201cIt\u2019s an underserved opportunity. So many of the youth programs in Oxford tend to be centered around sports, which is great, but there wasn\u2019t a place where kids could play music together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Wilkes had been involved from the start, but recently he took on full leadership of the school.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cAbout a year ago, [the Meyerses] decided to move out of it now that the training wheels are off,\u201d said Wilkes. \u201cIt\u2019s been great. We have a lot of fun.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The school offers lessons in guitar, piano, vocals, bass guitar, and drums. Students receive individual instruction through one-on-one lessons with some of the finest musicians in the area. Professors at Roxford University include<strong> Bill Perry Jr. (piano)<\/strong>, <strong>Eric Deaton (guitar)<\/strong>, <strong>Shy Perry (vocals)<\/strong>, <strong>Nick Spiller (guitar)<\/strong>, <strong>Newt Rayburn (bass guitar &amp; drums)<\/strong>, and <strong>Mike Namorato (drums)<\/strong>. Students also have a band session with a coach every week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Part of the fun for Wilkes is seeing the young musicians grow and become confident in their ability.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cA highlight for me is when you see a little girl who has never performed in front of anyone before and has a beautiful voice stand in front of a group, as nervous as she\u2019s ever been and on the biggest stage in Oxford other than the Ford center, and she just blows everybody away,\u201d said Wilkes. \u201cSeeing kids feel this exhilaration when they go out and do what they\u2019ve been working on for months is great.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018-05-10-RoxfordFlyer.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-46341 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018-05-10-RoxfordFlyer.jpg?resize=603%2C960\" alt=\"\" width=\"603\" height=\"960\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThere will be several groups performing,\u201d said Wilkes. \u201cVolume, Remix, and Emery Kate Snyder will be performing as well as others. It\u2019s a pretty big bag of classic rock with a little bit of contemporary in the mix.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The bands all consist of Roxford University students, and while groups typically form within age brackets there is no hard rule.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got kids ranging from seven to eighteen,\u201d said Wilkes. \u201cWe generally do it by age but we\u2019ve got some students who have been with us for three years and decided they want to play with certain other kids because they\u2019ve been around for a while.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In addition to being a unique experience for the students, another benefit of the showcases is that it helps them with stage fright.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cSome of our veterans, they\u2019re not quite as nervous, but some of the kids get jittery and that\u2019s all part of the experience,\u201d said Wilkes. \u201cIt\u2019s teaching them what if feels like to go on stage and put it out there for everybody.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Another rewarding experience Wilkes has had was with a student who, through Roxford University, found his passion.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe had a student who graduated high school and is now studying music in college,\u201d said Wilkes. \u201cHe didn\u2019t really have any direction in what he wanted to do in life until he came to us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Tickets for Roxford University Spring Showcase on May 10 will be available at the door the night of the show for $10.
