{"id":46044,"date":"2018-04-25T10:00:17","date_gmt":"2018-04-25T16:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=46044"},"modified":"2018-04-25T11:46:11","modified_gmt":"2018-04-25T17:46:11","slug":"squirrel-nut-zippers-ready-to-cut-a-rug-at-double-decker-arts-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/squirrel-nut-zippers-ready-to-cut-a-rug-at-double-decker-arts-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"Squirrel Nut Zippers Ready to Cut a Rug at Double Decker Arts Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Saturday, April 28<br \/>\n2:30 pm<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snzippers.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Squirrel Nut Zippers<\/strong><\/a> began their musical journey in <strong>Chapel Hill<\/strong>, <strong>North Carolina<\/strong>, in the mid 1990\u2019s, as a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">musician\u2019s escape from the cookie cutter world of modern rock radio at the time. <strong>Jimbo Mathus<\/strong> along with\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">drummer\/percussionist <strong>Chris Phillips<\/strong> formed the band as a casual musical foray among friends and family in the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">area. It wasn\u2019t long before the band\u2019s quirky mix of jazz chords, folk music, and punk rock leanings spread out of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">the region and attracted a national audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Between 1995-2000 the Squirrel Nut Zippers sold over three million albums. Their album <em>Hot<\/em> (1996) was recorded\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">in the heat of <strong>New Orleans<\/strong>, fueled by a smoldering mix of booze and a youthful hunger to unlock the secrets of old\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">world jazz. This passion mixed with klezmer, blues, americana and random bits of contemporary music became\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">the band&#8217;s signature style. At the time, there were few other bands inhabiting this space. The album would\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">eventually break free of any \u201cjazz\u201d stereotypes and land on commercial radio, taking the band to remarkable heights\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">for what was essentially an anti-establishment sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Years later and through chronicles of every kind, the band has emerged from a lengthy recording hiatus,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">reinvigorated, reinvested, and rejuvenated. \u201cIt\u2019s not a reunion, it\u2019s a revival\u201d has been the battle cry for Mathus\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">since reforming the group in 2016. With an all star cast of New Orleans musicians, the band breathed new life in to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">the old material, and inspired Mathus to return to the studio to reignite the band\u2019s unique, enigmatic sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9uiYp8xKjLM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The result, is the first Squirrel Nut Zippers studio album in eighteen years titled <em>Beasts of Burgundy<\/em>. A return to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">form, the album embraces the city that first inspired the group. Enlisting <strong>Mike Napolitano<\/strong> \u2013 who recorded all the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">bands previous albums \u2013 was a magical first step in the process. \u201cNappys Dugout\u201d, located in the Marigny,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">resembled the original style and feel of <strong>Kingsway<\/strong>, the now gone studio where the Zippers recorded much of their\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">catalog. The Dugout, located in the home of Mike Napolitano and Ani DiFranco, created the perfect environment to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">inspire the original feeling that so excited Mathus at the very beginning of the Zippers long career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The group has spent recent years working on its sound on the road and working its way towards this Inevitable\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">conclusion of songs. A kind of uncontrolled experiment in music on the road allowed the band to feed off audiences\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">energy and surrender to the dancing muse, rather than trying to subscribe to a preconceived notion.
