{"id":46024,"date":"2018-04-24T17:00:42","date_gmt":"2018-04-24T23:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=46024"},"modified":"2018-04-24T15:21:03","modified_gmt":"2018-04-24T21:21:03","slug":"houndmouth-brings-youthful-americana-to-double-decker-arts-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/houndmouth-brings-youthful-americana-to-double-decker-arts-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"Houndmouth Brings Youthful Americana to Double Decker Arts Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Saturday, April 28<br \/>\n7 pm<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In the small town of <strong>New Albany<\/strong>, <strong>Indiana<\/strong> <strong>Matt Myers<\/strong> (guitar, vocals), <strong>Shane Cody<\/strong> (drums, vocals) and <strong>Zak\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Appleby<\/strong> (bass, vocals) became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Houndmouth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Houndmouth<\/strong><\/a> in the summer of 2011.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In 2012, the group issued a self-titled EP on <strong>Rough Trade Records<\/strong>, who signed them after seeing a single gig. One\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">of 2013\u2019s most incandescent debuts, their <em>From the Hills Below the City<\/em> LP affirmed what label owner <strong>Geoff Travis\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">had heard: the sounds of Americana, renewed by the youthful glow of songwriters, musicians and pals unafraid to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">both celebrate and desecrate them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>The Guardian<\/em> noted that, with <em>From the Hills<\/em>, \u201creservations fade,\u201d while <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2019s <strong>David Fricke<\/strong> lauded the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cearthy melancholy with a rude garage-rock streak.\u201d Treks with the <strong>Drive-by Truckers<\/strong> and <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>Alabama Shakes<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">followed, plus performances at the <strong>Newport Folk Festival<\/strong>, <strong>Lollapalooza<\/strong> and <strong>Bonnaroo<\/strong>. In cramped clubs and big\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">theaters alike, Houndmouth earned a reputation as a must-see act, their hooks, energy and charisma making them\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">feel like a lifelong friend you\u2019d just met.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Y8wifV5RYr8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">With their success Houndmouth learned that being full-time musicians required much more than the nine-to-five\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">work schedule they had been used to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe\u2019re not in party mode all the time anymore,\u201d says Myers. \u201cWe\u2019re refining how we write songs, writing about\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">people we love, more important things than just nonsensical stuff.\u201d If that was the charge, then Little Neon\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Limelight is an unapologetic success. These eleven songs sparkle, fade, and sparkle again, mixing innocence and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">experience, acceptance and aspiration, horror and hope.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Recorded by <strong>Dave Cobb<\/strong> in <strong>Nashville<\/strong>, <em>Little Neon Limelight<\/em> (2016) pairs the energy and nerves of raw first takes\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">with the accents and moods of a more contemplative, thoughtful unit. Hearts are broken and friends are exiled, love\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">grows cold and drugs do damage, leaders make mistakes and money turns tricks. Haunted by samples of the buoyant\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">opener and single \u201cSedona\u201d and the noisy filigree of a <strong>Moog<\/strong>, the beautifully downcast \u201cFor No One\u201d stalks through\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">personal blues with conviction. Its world-weariness has been incubated by the world it surveys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Despite the turmoil embedded within many of these songs, they are equal parts energetic proclamation, built with\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">choruses that can\u2019t be denied, harmonies that can\u2019t be escaped and rhythms that can\u2019t be resisted. With its carousel\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">keyboards and start-and-stop drums, \u201cSay I\u201d is a combination come-on and kiss-off that might make <strong>Keith Richards\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">blush. For \u201c15 Years,\u201d Houndmouth conjures barroom bluster to voice the woes of a prisoner, backing the cries of<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">his soul with howling organ and slashing guitar. When all the action drops into a shout-along, gospel-strong bridge,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">you might feel the urge to bust the fella out yourself.
