{"id":46005,"date":"2018-04-24T14:05:36","date_gmt":"2018-04-24T20:05:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=46005"},"modified":"2018-04-25T15:50:29","modified_gmt":"2018-04-25T21:50:29","slug":"cold-war-kids-play-double-decker-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/cold-war-kids-play-double-decker-in\/","title":{"rendered":"Cold War Kids Play Double Decker In Oxford, Mississippi"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Saturday, April 28<br \/>\n8:30 pm<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Based in <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldwarkids.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Cold War Kids<\/strong><\/a> formed in 2004, soon after vocalist <strong>Nathan Willett<\/strong> and bass guitar player <strong>Matt Maust<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">met in college and bonded over their obsession with a <strong>Blur<\/strong> album. The band also includes drummer<strong> Joe Plummer<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">guitarist <strong>David Quon<\/strong> and multi-instrumentalist <strong>Matthew Schwartz<\/strong>. In 2006 they successfully released their debut\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">album <em>Robbers &amp; Cowards<\/em>. The notably darker <em>Loyalty To Loyalty<\/em> followed two years later, while 2011&#8217;s <em>Mine Is\u00a0<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Yours<\/em> introduced a more anthemic element to the Cold War Kids catalog. With 2013&#8217;s <em>Dear Miss Lonelyhearts<\/em>, the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">band returned to their fierce live sound and offered up their hit single &#8220;Miracle Mile.&#8221; They\u2019ve had hits like \u201cFirst\u201d,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">which spent six weeks in the top spot of Billboard\u2019s Alternative Songs chart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zE23hMLbHg4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Released just last April, their sixth album <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/6VDdCwrBM4qQaGxoAyxyJC?autoplay=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>LA Divine<\/em><\/a>, Cold War Kids pay tribute to Los Angeles. Its title is slightly\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">tongue-in-cheek. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;In many ways LA is the least divine city, the most hedonistic and irreverent and disconnected\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">from history,&#8221; says Cold War Kids singer\/guitarist\/pianist Nathan Willett. Still, <em>LA Divine<\/em> embodies the Long\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Beach-bred band&#8217;s endless fascination with their adopted hometown. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;LA&#8217;s so massive, I feel like I&#8217;m always finding\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">something new in it,&#8221; says bassist Matt Maust. &#8220;It&#8217;s an incredibly weird place, and I&#8217;m happy to have made a record\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">that totally honors that weirdness.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/2018-04-24-COLDwarKIds.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-46006\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/2018-04-24-COLDwarKIds.jpg?resize=620%2C349\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/2018-04-24-COLDwarKIds.jpg?w=620&amp;ssl=1 620w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/2018-04-24-COLDwarKIds.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a>A feeling of infinite discovery instills much of <em>LA Divine<\/em>, the band&#8217;s most expansive and ambitious effort so far.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">With Cold War Kids having marked the 10-year anniversary of their acclaimed debut <em>Robbers &amp; Cowards<\/em> (a 2006\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">release that spawned their breakthrough single &#8220;Hang Me Up to Dry&#8221;), the album channels the kinetic energy of a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">newly revitalized band. &#8220;The excitement I have about this new album\u2014it feels so much like the way I felt back\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">when our first record came out,&#8221; notes Maust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Along with elevating Cold War Kids&#8217; songwriting on <em>LA Divine<\/em>, that ever-renewing sense of purpose continues to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">breathe new life into the band. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve seen a lot of bands get burnt out on their own songs after playing them for years, but for me that&#8217;s not the case,&#8221; says Maust. &#8220;I&#8217;ve been playing &#8216;Hospital Beds&#8217; for 13 years, and it means something\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">different to me now than it did when we first started. I don&#8217;t know where that spark comes from, but I don&#8217;t think I\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">can stir it up on my own.
