We caught up with <strong>Jim Barrett<\/strong> to talk about starting Swear Tapes, working with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/muscle-beach-records-independant-oxford-label-on-the-rise\/\"><strong>Muscle Beach Records<\/strong><\/a>, and recording the album.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Barrett previously played in the indie rock outfit <strong>Young Buffalo<\/strong>. It was while on their way home after a tour that he decided to start work on Swear Tapes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-45956\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/swear-tapes.jpg?resize=500%2C500\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI remember being in the van and driving some nine hours back to Oxford thinking I needed to do something new, I needed something different,\u201d said Barrett. \u201cIt was holidays of 2016 when I started recording. I took a little time off [from performing] but I jumped in on recording. Our First show wasn\u2019t until May opening for Whitney.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">The bulk of writing for the album was done in 2016 with a \u201clate creative push finishing the album [March of] last year,\u201d said Barrett. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt\u2019s where I\u2019ve been musically for the last two or three years,\u201d said Barrett. \u201cThere\u2019s a song I\u2019d written when I was still with Young Buffalo, \u2018Money,\u2019 it was never meant to be a Young Buffalo song but we\u2019d play it just because we were tired of all the songs we\u2019d been playing. . .and then \u201cTeeth\u201d was a demo I\u2019d recorded when I was with Ills. I just decided if I\u2019m going to do a solo record it might as well have all the songs I love.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qpVyT6Rgypw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">The album kicks off with \u201cPushover,\u201d a catchy pop rock track lamenting the tale of being used by those around you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt\u2019s definitely self-deprecating,\u201d said Barrett. \u201cIt might be a little more intense than intended. There was a band that stayed at my house that stole some things and one of them wet the bed, my roommates bed. I felt like I was a bit taken advantage so I decided to just write the song as this character that\u2019s a deadbeat and everybody pushes around.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Son<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was recorded over the better part of 2016 and wrapped in early spring of 2017 at Will Eubanks\u2019 cabin and home studio.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with the album release, Barrett is working with director\u00a0<strong>Alex Thiel<\/strong> to produce a music video for \u201cRight Now\u201d off of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Son.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThe concept was the do a fun, manic video with lots of twists and turns, much like the song,\u201d said Thiel. \u201cIt\u2019s basically a short film centered around a botched bank heist. It was a blast to make and our lead actors killed, they\u2019re naturals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=726804833\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sweartapes.bandcamp.com\/album\/second-son\">Second Son by Swear Tapes<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Barrett has plans to tour on Second Son, but just getting the album out to the public has been the most exciting part of preparing for the release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;It&#8217;s been done for some long just sitting in the chamber,&#8221; said Barrett. \u201cI\u2019m excited to get this out and for people to hear it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Swear Tapes is playing the <strong>Record Store Day<\/strong> party \u00a0at <strong>Proud Larrys\u2019<\/strong> on April 21 along with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/mississippis-young-valley-premier-single-off-upcoming-album\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Young Valley<\/strong><\/a>, also celebrating a new album release, <strong>Dreamland Gateway<\/strong>, and <strong>PW Franci$.<\/strong>\u00a0Pick up <em>Second Son<\/em> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/sweartapes.bandcamp.com\/album\/second-son\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swear Tapes Bandcamp<\/a>.<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"16\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14544 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg?resize=25%2C16\" alt=\"The Local Voice Ligature\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Swear Tapes is releasing Second Son, the debut full length, on April 20.
