The trio blew up with &#8220;Versace&#8221; in 2013 and solidified themselves in rap history with the 2017 release of\u00a0<em>Culture<\/em> featuring hits like &#8220;T-Shirt&#8221; and &#8220;Bad and Boujee&#8221; featuring<strong> Lil Uzi Vert<\/strong>. The three <strong>Atlanta<\/strong>, <strong>Georgia<\/strong> rapper followed up in 2018 with <em>Culture 2\u00a0<\/em>which saw equal success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Lil Yachty, another artist that rose up through the ATL ranks, made his mark with hits &#8220;1 NIGHT&#8221; and &#8220;Minnesota&#8221;. There\u2019s no better song to have sex to.<\/em>\u201d &#8211; Donald Glover<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Aside from celebrating a deserved win for the flawless debut season of his excellent TV show\u00a0<em>Atlanta<\/em>, much of the spotlight on Donald Glover\u2019s success at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/film\/la-la-land-sweeps-golden-globes-see-full-winners-list-1940244\">the Golden Globes<\/a>\u00a0on Sunday (January 8) fell on his love for the hip-hop group\u00a0<strong>Migos<\/strong>\u00a0(and not just because they guest-starred in an episode of\u00a0<em>Atlanta<\/em>).\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/donald-glover-migos-beatles-of-this-generation-1940450\">After lauding their 2016 single \u2018Bad and Boujee\u2019 as \u201cthe best song ever\u201d<\/a>\u00a0during his acceptance speech for\u00a0<em>Atlanta<\/em>\u2018s triumph in the Best Television Comedy category, Glover went a step further in the post-awards press conference by eulogising the Atlanta trap trio as \u201cthe\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/the-beatles\">Beatles<\/a>\u00a0of this generation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The reaction was huge: \u2018Bad and Boujee\u2019 became possibly the most-played song in the world yesterday, with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/migos-bad-and-boujee-enjoys-streaming-boost-after-donald-glover-shout-out-1941320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a 243% increase in streams leading to the track shooting straight to the top of the US Hot 100 singles chart,<\/a>\u00a0giving Migos their first-ever number one song in their home country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But Glover\u2019s shout-out at the Golden Globes wasn\u2019t Migos\u2019 first brush with the mainstream. Interestingly, Quavo is Takeoff\u2019s uncle, while Offset and Quavo are cousins \u2013 Migos is very much a family affair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Originally from <strong>Lawrenceville, Georgia<\/strong>, the trio \u2013 who formed in 2009 \u2013 are now known for representing the state\u2019s capital Atlanta, arguably trap music\u2019s spiritual home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Back in 2015, the trio briefly had to operate as a duo when Offset was sent to jail following a police raid on the group\u2019s tourbus after a show at Georgia State University. While Quavo and Takeoff were released on bond, Offset was remanded in custody \u2013 a situation he didn\u2019t exactly make any better by running up charges of battery and inciting a riot within a penal facility while in jail. The rapper was finally released in December 2015 after eight months in custody, reuniting the three Migos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Noisey<\/em>\u2018s controversial profile of Migos from the same year serves as an eye-opening visual introduction to the group \u2013 with the amount of weapons and weed lying around at their country club home, it\u2019s no wonder\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.factmag.com\/2015\/07\/29\/migos-noisey-atlanta-documentary-scripted-movie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">they went on to dismiss the short film as \u201ca scripted movie.\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LE0N9tTs2Ho\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What songs\u00a0have Migos\u00a0released?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Since Migos dropped their first mixtape, \u2018Jugg Season\u2019, in 2011, the group have been prolific when it comes to free releases \u2013 fourteen\u00a0more mixtapes have followed that original offering, with the most prominent being the breakthrough \u2018Y.R.N\u2019 mixtape (2013), as well as \u2018Rich N*gga Timeline\u2019 (2014) and \u2018Back To The Bando\u2019 (2015). They\u2019re independent-minded as well, self-releasing much of their music through their own Quality Control label. Their distribution partnership with Atlantic Records imprint 300 Entertainment \u2013 also the home of Young Thug and Fetty Wap \u2013 is as corporate as Migos get.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Their rapid style of lyrical delivery \u2013 which has an emphasis on spitting in triplets \u2013 won many of their fans over, as did the jerky, yet often oddly beautiful, trap production from group affiliate and leading Atlanta producer Zaytoven \u2013 introduced to Migos by the trap godfather, Gucci Mane, in 2012 \u2013 that appeared on a number of Migos\u2019 earliest hits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/y8Kydw78-ro\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The group are currently readying themselves for the release of their second album \u2018Culture\u2019, which drops on January 27. The new record, which features \u2018Bad and Boujee\u2019, will follow their July 2015 debut studio offering, \u2018Yung Rich Nation\u2019, which featured the Migos staples \u2018One Time\u2019 and \u2018Handsome &amp; Wealthy\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How did Migos get noticed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Where Migos really have come alive in their rise to the top is through the success of individual songs, many of which have taken on a life of their own in the social age \u2013 their latest success, \u2018Bad and Boujee\u2019, included.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Their first majorly successful song,\u00a0<strong>\u2018Versace\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 written, unsurprisingly, about the group\u2019s penchant for wearing clothing and jewellery from the Italian fashion house \u2013 went Gold in the US in 2013 (with a little help from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/gg4bmd1canU\">a Drake remix<\/a>, of course), no doubt burrowing its way into the conscious of its listeners across the country through its simple-yet-effective hook (fun fact: \u2018Versace\u2019 is mentioned a mere 91 times in the song).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rF-hq_CHNH0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The next step on Migos\u2019 path to success came again via the viral route, with another piece of earworm greatness in the form of\u00a0<strong>\u2018Hannah Montana\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0(which also featured on 2013\u2019s \u2018Y.R.N\u2019). The success of \u2018Hannah Montana\u2019 was particularly driven by its popularity in high schools, with Vine (R.I.P) videos of students going wild to the song in cafeterias during their lunch break spreading across the internet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vVuE4Kcyu10\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Another aspect of Migos\u2019 popularity comes from their tendency to embrace the unusual \u2013 something they very much did through their link up with Audiomack in July 2015, who paired Quavo and Takeoff with a mini orchestra to create one of the first ever instances of a \u2018Trap Symphony\u2019. The results, as you might expect, are quite exquisite.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Dab \u2013 did Migos invent it?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Well, they certainly think they did, anyway. In 2015 Migos released \u2018Look At My Dab\u2019, with an accompanying video showing the rappers dabbing \u2013 that\u2019s the head-dropped-arm-up dance that went on to dominate and subsequently die a very messy death in 2016 \u2013 in the studio, which appeared to inspire US sports stars to embrace the move in celebration shortly after, consequently kicking off its global popularity (before the likes of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4UugS9l6QvI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manchester United\u2019s Jesse Lingard ruined it for everyone,<\/a>\u00a0that is).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">However, Migos\u2019 claim that they invented the dab was refuted by some of their peers, who highlighted the fact that the dance had existed in the southern hip-hop scene years before \u2018Look At My Dab\u2019. It\u2019s most likely, therefore, that the craze was ignited by Migos rather than it being something that they\u2019d entirely created, but the wild, unrelenting frenzy of the dab phenomenon spoke volumes for Migos\u2019 ever-increasing global profile.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Are they\u00a0<em>really<\/em>\u00a0better than The Beatles?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Glover\u2019s claim will no doubt irritate some, but he\u2019s not the first person to compare Migos\u2019 impact to that of The Fab Four.
