{"id":45075,"date":"2018-03-07T09:46:33","date_gmt":"2018-03-07T15:46:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=45075"},"modified":"2018-03-07T09:46:33","modified_gmt":"2018-03-07T15:46:33","slug":"anne-strand-exhibit-currently-at-southside-gallery-through-march-31-artist-reception-thursday-march-8-at-5-pm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/anne-strand-exhibit-currently-at-southside-gallery-through-march-31-artist-reception-thursday-march-8-at-5-pm\/","title":{"rendered":"Anne Strand Exhibit Currently at Southside Gallery through March 31, artist reception Thursday, March 8 at 5 pm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">SHATTERED SILK:\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">New Works by Anne Strand<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong><span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1848421310\"><span class=\"aQJ\">March 6\u201331, 2018<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">with an artist reception\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong><span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1848421311\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Thursday, March 8, 5\u20138 pm<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_45093\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45093\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/anne-strand-1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-45093 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/anne-strand-1.jpg?resize=640%2C853\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-45093\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Detail of Past and Present, Anne Strand, hanging quilt with mixed media<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Anne Strand<\/strong> will exhibit new mixed media collages\/paintings on canvas and mixed media collages\/paintings on vintage patchwork quilts this March at <strong>Southside Gallery<\/strong>.\u00a0 Strand describes the exhibition, titled Shattered Silk, as a tribute to \u201cicons of the feminine visage,\u201d which \u201csymbolize the artistry of the feminine eye as set forth in quilt form over the ages.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">THE QUILT<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A quilt\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18.6667px;\">made by her great-grandmother<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">, which won first prize at the 1901 Tri-State Fair, inspired Strand\u2019s new body of work.\u00a0 A silk quilt, made by her grandmother for her mother, was also an inspiration for <\/span><strong><em style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Shattered Silk<\/em><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">.\u00a0 The silk quilt hangs in her studio.\u00a0 She describes both quilts as \u201csubtle and beautiful works of art\u201d and writes that although quilting wasn\u2019t considered fine art at the time the quilts were constructed, that the women who made them \u201cwere certainly artists.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Strand began her new series of work by collecting \u201cpre-1930 quilts and quilt fragments that were deteriorating.\u201d\u00a0 A collage artist and painter, Strand did no additional sewing or stitching to the vintage quilts or quilt fragments herself.\u00a0 Instead, she collaged the fragments onto canvases and painted and collaged directly on the hanging quilts.\u00a0 The mixed-media works include materials such as Chinese spirit paper, paint, twentieth-century weavings and \u201ceye like vintage or antique buttons.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Shattered Silk <\/em>marks a major evolution in Strand\u2019s work.\u00a0 Strand, best known for her meditative abstract paintings, has not only begun to explore new media, but a new narrative has emerged in her work as well.\u00a0 The meditative quality of Strand\u2019s past work carries over to the collages featured in Shattered Silk, but she also addresses feminism\u2014a timely social and political topic to say the least\u2014and the oppression of silence women often endure.\u00a0 Strand writes in her artist\u2019s statement, \u201cThis exhibition celebrates the quilt, with all its complex layering and beautiful patterning, as a metaphor for creation\u2014a visual blueprint unconsciously reminding us of the greater design.
