He was known as a soul musician with his performances dating back to the 60s. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In addition to his musical talents, Wiley was a renowned leather worker and operated his own shop for years in the location that is now <strong>Saint Leo<\/strong>. That building was also once home to <strong>Parrish&#8217;s<\/strong>, <strong>Taylor&#8217;s Pub<\/strong>, and\u00a0from 1920\u2013early 1960s,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.southernfoodways.org\/interview\/bb-cafe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the <strong>B&amp;B Cafe<\/strong><\/a>, which was owned by Wiley&#8217;s father.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_45123\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45123\" style=\"width: 340px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/b-and-b-cafe-340x240.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-45123 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/b-and-b-cafe-340x240.jpg?resize=340%2C240\" alt=\"\" width=\"340\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-45123\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photograph by Martin J. Dain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18.6667px;\">As our own memorial to Wiley we&#8217;ve put together a collection of posts, videos, and messages from those impacted by his life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Mr. Wiley among his many talents was a gentleman of style and class,&#8221; said <strong>Allie Jo Moore<\/strong>. &#8220;He was sitting next to me at the bar for lunch at Ajax. It was a cold winter day. I was wearing a leather bomber jacket with an 8 inch rip along the front seam. He said to me, &#8216;Allie,\u00a0you can&#8217;t go walking around here with a rip in your jacket like that, child. Bring it by the shop and I will fix it up for you.&#8217; He sewed and soldered it. That was 15 years ago. It&#8217;s still holding strong.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Nathan Robbins<\/strong>, local musician, recalled playing a gig with Wiley where he pulled aside fellow Oxford musician <strong>Mills Hawkins<\/strong> to consult with him in regards to his ripped jeans and taking pride in his appearance on stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fnateynate%2Fposts%2F10103619304761106&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"269\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Mr Herbert Wiley was one of a kind,&#8221; said Mills Hawkins. &#8220;Back around 2006 or 2007 (can\u2019t remember which) he was on hiatus w\/ the Checkmates. During this period myself,\u00a0Adrian Dickey\u00a0&amp;\u00a0Austin Marshall\u00a0had the privilege of playing w\/ Wiley under the name &#8216;Mr Wiley &amp; the Blu Flu&#8217;.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;We rotated keyboard duties between\u00a0Jared Spears\u00a0&amp;\u00a0Tom Freeland. This was also around the same time that Wiley started his first battle w\/ cancer and chemo. We played alot of shows, and I remember Wiley would sometimes have\u00a0<span class=\"text_exposed_show\">to sit down and rest for a set, so we would just improvise until he had enough strength to get back up and rock the house.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span class=\"text_exposed_show\">&#8220;Not once did he ever complain, and he never canceled a show. That says alot about that man, and his passion for life and music. There will never be another Herbert Wiley, and I\u2019m so thankful for the memories he gave me. Truly one of a kind, and I was just lucky enough to have crossed paths w\/ such a great soul.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Blues historian <strong>Scott Barretta<\/strong> posted his condolences for the master cobbler, spurring a flood of comments from those already missing him dearly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fpermalink.php%3Fstory_fbid%3D10103617992406076%26id%3D6514246&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"623\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Barretta believes a video of Wiley playing a tribute to his late bandmate, <strong>J.D. Mark<\/strong>, is one of the final performances the master cobbler and soul man ever gave. This was shot by <strong>Newt Rayburn<\/strong> at <strong>The Blind Pig<\/strong> in July of 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Growing up in Oxford in the 70s and 80s, I knew Mr. Wiley as a shoe and leather repairman,&#8221; said Newt Rayburn, local musician and Publisher of <em>The Local Voice<\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;He was everybody&#8217;s go-to guy when you had a problem with your leather duds, and growing up rocknroll, I needed his help many times.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Sometime in the early 2000s he restarted his band Wiley &amp; The Checkmates, and everybody was just blown away,&#8221; explained Rayburn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Mr. Wiley called me up after J.D. Mark passed away and thanked me for filming him at the tribute show. He was deeply moved by the passing of his guitarist, and there really wasn&#8217;t much footage of him performing live, which is surprising.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CMVFlZIi7rM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Due to public response the family expects a larger turnout and has moved Wiley&#8217;s funeral to <strong>Oxford-University Methodist Church<\/strong> 424 South 10th Street Saturday, March 10, 2018, at 11 am<\/span>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"16\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14544 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg?resize=25%2C16\" alt=\"The Local Voice Ligature\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Herbert Wiley was a stalwart in the Oxford community and music scene.
