The two started playing together in 2013 and released an EP under their original name. After a break up and a couple bands between then and now, they are back together and releasing a full length, self-titled album under the new name.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt was a natural progression for us,\u201d said Hatch. \u201cThe new material we were writing was similar but . . . evolved and stronger.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">The duo found that the old material wasn\u2019t connecting with them anymore. With how much both had improved as musicians and grown as people, they felt rebranding the project was the best way to represent what they are trying to do now.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_45137\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45137\" style=\"width: 2001px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/chums.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-45137 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/chums.jpg?resize=640%2C470\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"470\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-45137\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brian Hatch (left) and Jace Hughes (right) all photographs by Suanne Strider<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhen we started working on the new stuff, there was something about the new sound he was pumping out of the bass that sounded meaningful,\u201d said Hughes. \u00a0\u201cI thought, \u2018Okay I can\u2019t just scream about girl, girl, sex, sex.\u2019 I wanted to actually say something so I started writing more seriously, and it felt like a different band.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">They were hesitant to leave behind the old material that still represented a time in their lives, but after playing through it they knew Goodnight Light needed to stand on its own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThere was some of that nostalgia grabbing onto me,\u201d said Hatch. \u201cBut [playing the old songs] just wasn\u2019t the same and we had to leave those behind.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Goodnight Light\u2019s debut album features four songs, but with the run-time coming in just around 30 minutes, it is by no means an EP. \u201cElizabeth\u201d and \u201cAnswers and the Key\u201d both ended up being much longer songs than either musician realized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t even know they were that long,\u201d said Hughes. \u201cWe timed them out then realized we have two nine minute songs on the album and were just like, \u2018Oops.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt feels like a natural progression,\u201d said Hatch. \u201c[\u2018Elizabeth\u2019], the bulk of it, we wrote in one take then just fine tuned it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Songwriting for Hughes and Hatch is usually a situation of writing it as they play, each relying on knowing how the other plays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cSome songs are just completed and we\u2019re like, \u2018Cool we\u2019ve got a song,\u2019\u201d said Hughes. \u201cI always thought [finishing a song quickly] was a red flag. I never did that with other bands I\u2019ve been in . . . but we just both want to go the same way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWith it just being the two of us it makes it more difficult but also easier but at the same time,\u201d said Hatch. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot more on our shoulders but we have a lot more leeway in the direction we can go. It wasn\u2019t always like this, but after playing together for four or five years it\u2019s almost like there\u2019s a shorthand now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing was put on pause while they recorded <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goodnight Light<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dialbacksound.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dial Back Sound<\/a> in Water Valley, Mississippi. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe did a mini-tour down to the coast and when we got back went directly into the studio the next day,\u201d said Hatch. \u201cWe\u2019ve both been working our asses off in kitchens then we have this break to go record music in the studio and I experienced this moment where I felt like this is where I\u2019m meant to be. This feels amazing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhen we wrote [Elizabeth] we both looked at each other and just knew,\u201d said Hatch. \u201cWe still haven\u2019t played that song live, but there\u2019s always gonna be a special place in our hearts for that song. . .It\u2019s based off someone I know and still means a lot to me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThat song was three years in the making,\u201d added Hughes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Three years for one song seems like a long time, but when you consider that their original project formed half a decade ago it just seems in theme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Half a decade ago Hughes sang for the first time in front of an audience as one half of The Heard and he was terrified. He admits he was terrified every show after that and it wasn\u2019t until he played with <\/span><b>Bad Dates<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Hughes began to come into his own as a vocalist.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe were doing such off-the-wall, punk crazy shit that I just got to a point I didn\u2019t give a f**k if anyone liked it because it makes me feel good,\u201d said Hughes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That sense of comfort along with his and Hatch\u2019s talent comes through clear on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goodnight Light.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The duo delivers a fresh, heavy sound from the album\u2019s opener \u201cElizabeth\u201d to the final track \u201cI hope I See You Come.\u201d The album releases March 17 and will be available to stream as well as in physical format.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goodnight Light will be playing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proudlarrys.com\/event\/1645609-heard-oxford\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free show<\/a> at Proud Larry\u2019s on St. Patrick\u2019s Day, March 17.
