OXFORD, Miss<\/strong>. \u2013 The 15th annual Oxford Film Festival finished up in February and will now\u00a0<\/span>travel the state from Water Valley<\/strong> to Oxford<\/strong> to Ocean Springs<\/strong> to Vicksburg<\/strong> to Meridian<\/strong> and\u00a0<\/span>Jackson<\/strong> with some of the highlighted films and Hoka<\/strong> award winners. This year\u2019s festival\u00a0<\/span>featured over 200 films and the Best of Tour has two different film blocks being shown across\u00a0<\/span>the state.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAfter another successful festival with many great films, we are happy to announce that the show\u00a0<\/span>isn\u2019t over yet,\u201d Executive Director Melanie Addington<\/strong> said. \u201cIf you were unable to attend the\u00a0<\/span>festival this year, then don\u2019t miss out on these key dates in March that are set to feature some of\u00a0<\/span>the winning and unique Mississippi films. We are so excited to be working with our venue\u00a0<\/span>partners throughout the state, especially the Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center for our fourth year\u00a0<\/span>in a row and the second year with The Strand Theatre in Vicksburg and adding on the\u00a0<\/span>Mississippi Museum of Art and Amelia and Temple Theatre this year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Depending on the venue, two film blocks will be screened. Ocean Springs and Jackson will play\u00a0<\/span>both film blocks for a mini-film festival. A panel discussion with the filmmakers will follow the\u00a0<\/span>first block screening in Jackson.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Best of Tour will travel from Water Valley at Amelia on March 10 to Oxford at the\u00a0<\/span>Powerhouse on March 15 then down to Ocean Springs at the Mary C<\/strong> on March 16, Strand\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Theater<\/strong> in Vicksburg on March 18 and over to the Temple Theater<\/strong> in Meridian on March 19. A\u00a0<\/span>short break will be held before the closing event at Mississippi Museum of Art<\/strong> in Jackson on\u00a0<\/span>March 31 where a panel discussion will be held with both sets of film blocks screening.<\/span><\/p>\n

Block one consists of:<\/span><\/p>\n

Hoka winner “Manna”<\/strong> by King Woman<\/strong> and directed by Vincent Jude Chaney<\/strong>. Led by the hypnotic<\/span>
\nand breathy vocal dramatics of Kristina Esfandiari<\/strong>, the Hoka-winning music video unveils the<\/span>
\nprofoundly crafted opus of brooding, ethereal doom-rock.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hoka Winner for Fest Forward, Mark C. Smith<\/strong>\u2019s Two Balloons<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0animates two travelers’ return to<\/span>
\na place crossed by stars and clouds where love is at the beginning of everything.<\/span><\/p>\n

Highlighted Mississippi feature, Mississippi Madam<\/strong><\/em>, is Timothy Givens<\/strong> and Mark K.<\/strong><\/span>
\nBrockway<\/strong>\u2019s feature film, which chronicles the life of Nellie Jackson<\/strong>, an African-American
\n<\/span>woman born into poverty in Possum Corner, Miss., who travels north to Natchez in 1902 and<\/span>
\nopens a brothel she ran for more than 60 years with full knowledge of police and Natchez<\/span>
\nofficials until a fiery end one hot July night in 1990.<\/span><\/p>\n

Block two consists of:<\/span><\/p>\n

Directed by Nathan Willis<\/strong>, Cowgirl Up<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0tells the story of a cowgirl from Mississippi who\u00a0<\/span>pursues her lifelong dream to be the first African-American woman in the National Finals\u00a0<\/span>Rodeo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Peter Byck<\/strong>\u2019s One Hundred Thousand Beating Hearts<\/strong><\/em>, shares the story of a pioneering farmer in\u00a0<\/span>rural Georgia of his journey from industrialized beef production to sustainable, humane\u00a0<\/span>agricultural and environmental stewardship.<\/span><\/p>\n

Directed by Rex Jones<\/strong>, Flag Flap Over Mississippi<\/strong><\/em> is a filmic conversation between all sides of\u00a0<\/span>the state flag that hopes to generate more civil discussion in the public atmosphere.<\/span><\/p>\n

Truth Rises<\/strong><\/em>, directed by Kelly Buckholdt<\/strong>, is a short film about a brother and sister who talk\u00a0<\/span>about getting in trouble after mistakes are made in the family business. The film won the Pat\u00a0<\/span>Rasberry Emerging Filmmaker Award.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeff Dennis<\/strong>\u2019 The Process: The Way of Pablo Sierra<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is a film about a potter who lives in\u00a0<\/span>Yocona, Mississippi<\/strong>. Born in Spain, he came to Ole Miss on a track\u00a0 scholarship. He became a world-<\/span>class runner, and is now a potter, baker, and horseman. For Pablo, the process is everything.<\/span><\/p>\n
