Cochran Innocence Project<\/strong> in Mississippi Carrington come together to tell the story of <strong>Kennedy Brewer<\/strong> and <strong>Levon Brooks<\/strong>, two innocent men who spent a combined 30 years in prison. Brooks, sadly,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-watch\/wp\/2018\/01\/26\/levon-brooks-a-mississippi-man-wrongly-convicted-by-bad-forensics-dies-at-58\/?utm_term=.bfdc8f4c6024\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-watch\/wp\/2018\/01\/26\/levon-brooks-a-mississippi-man-wrongly-convicted-by-bad-forensics-dies-at-58\/?utm_term%3D.bfdc8f4c6024&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1519271888356000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG4Jnm5cPLPRDocl8shJsn13BTHow\">passed away last month<\/a>\u00a0at the age of 58. He spent 16 of those years behind bars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In\u00a0<em>The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist<\/em>, Balko and Carrington explore how such an atrocity can happen, focusing on the institutional racism and junk forensic science that plague Mississippi\u2019s\u2014and America\u2019s\u2014criminal justice system. Drs. <strong>Steven Hayne<\/strong> and <strong>Michael West<\/strong> factor prominently here. Go-to experts for the prosecution in Mississippi and Louisiana, their catastrophic errors led to countless hasty sentencings that defense attorneys like Carrington are\u00a0still working to overturn today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Cadaver-and-Dentist.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"253\" height=\"385\" class=\"size-full wp-image-44814 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Cadaver-and-Dentist.jpg?resize=253%2C385\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Balko has been following Mississippi\u2019s death investigation system\u2014a Jim Crow relic\u2014for over a decade. A member of the Mississippi legislature in the 1980s and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.innocenceproject.org\/author-john-grisham-tackles-criminal-justice-reform-wrongful-conviction-new-interview\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.innocenceproject.org\/author-john-grisham-tackles-criminal-justice-reform-wrongful-conviction-new-interview\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1519271888356000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEvPAtbO4yefoR0WAreJIuu6_Q9NA\">a proponent for criminal justice reform<\/a>, Grisham makes an impassioned case for readers to learn from Balko and Carrington\u2019s work in <em>The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist<\/em>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>\u201cThis is a maddening story of a broken system\u2026 As you turn the pages, you will often be tempted to close this book and either laugh or cry or yell that what happened in Mississippi cannot possibly be true. But it is. It happened in plain view and with the complicity of many who were sworn to uphold the law. It is my hope that this book might inspire those with the necessary will and persistence to finally bring justice for the men and women around the country who have been wrongfully convicted and to fix the system so that nothing like this can ever happen again.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Those in innocence work have made some strides on this front. Over the last 25 years, more than 2,000 exonerations have occurred in the United States. But workers know that America has a long way to go before justice is truly served.\u00a0In the US, actual wrongful conviction estimates range from 2 to 10 percent\u00a0(getting an exact number is difficult).
