On Tuesday, February 27,<\/a> award-winning journalist Radley Balko<\/strong> and University of Mississippi<\/strong> law professor Tucker Carrington<\/strong> will present their new book,\u00a0The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist <\/strong><\/em>at Off Square Books.<\/span><\/p>\n

In their first book together, Washington Post<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>reporter Balko and Director of the George C. Cochran Innocence Project<\/strong> in Mississippi Carrington come together to tell the story of Kennedy Brewer<\/strong> and Levon Brooks<\/strong>, two innocent men who spent a combined 30 years in prison. Brooks, sadly,\u00a0passed away last month<\/a>\u00a0at the age of 58. He spent 16 of those years behind bars.<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist<\/em>, Balko and Carrington explore how such an atrocity can happen, focusing on the institutional racism and junk forensic science that plague Mississippi\u2019s\u2014and America\u2019s\u2014criminal justice system. Their \u201cblistering expos\u00e9\u201d (Garden & Gun<\/em><\/a>) is a brilliantly reported and enraging chronicle of the decades-long abuses Mississippians like Brewer and Brooks have endured at the hands of overzealous prosecutors, compliant judges, bloodthirsty press, and\u2014perhaps most of all\u2014shoddy medical examiners. Drs. Steven Hayne<\/strong> and Michael West<\/strong> factor prominently here. Go-to experts for the prosecution in Mississippi and Louisiana, their catastrophic errors led to countless hasty sentencings that defense attorneys like Carrington are\u00a0still working to overturn today.<\/span><\/p>\n

Balko has been following Mississippi\u2019s death investigation system\u2014a Jim Crow relic\u2014for over a decade. His\u00a0reporting<\/a>\u00a0on it, and on Hayne and West\u2019s\u00a0in<\/em>expert testimony, introduced him to Carrington, as well as\u00a0John Grisham<\/strong>, who wrote the foreword to the text. Those in innocence work have made some strides on this front. Over the last 25 years, more than 2,000 exonerations have occurred in the United States. But workers know that America has a long way to go before justice is truly served.\u00a0In the US, actual wrongful conviction estimates range from 2 to 10 percent\u00a0(getting an exact number is difficult). These percentages may seem low, but when applied to a prison population of 2.3 million, they become staggering:\u00a0Anywhere from 46,000 to 230,000 innocent people could be locked away right now.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
