The 8th Annual Clarksdale Film Festival<\/strong> returns to Bluestown, USA\u2014Clarksdale, Mississippi\u2014on Friday and Saturday, January 26 and 27. And it\u2019s going to be a party.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a curated film festival, so it\u2019s not just whatever films came out this year,\u201d said cofounder Roger Stolle<\/strong>. \u201cWe premiere new works, of course, but we also showcase films that we think are important and folks may have missed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Films this year range from Two Trains Runnin\u2019<\/em><\/strong> (blues\/civil rights story of search for lost 1930s Mississippi\u2019s bluesmen during Freedom Summer) and Shake Sister Shake<\/em><\/strong> (world-premiere about women in blues, including Clarksdalians) to Love is a Sensation<\/em><\/strong> (about Mississippi folk artist\/personality LV Hull) and Chasing Trane<\/em><\/strong> (the acclaimed John Coltrane documentary). The film festival, which specializes in blues\/roots music and Mississippi-related movies, is also about more than just screenings, according to co-organizer Nan Hughes<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn addition to all of the wonderful films, we feature History Bus Tours of Clarksdale, a film workshop for kids, live blues music, a daily reception, special guests and more,\u201d said Hughes. \u201cThe Clarksdale Film Festival is really just another excuse to show off our amazing little music town.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s cool and funky pop-up theaters are Grandma\u2019s Sports Bar<\/strong> (115 3rd Street, next to Grandma\u2019s Blues House<\/strong> and Grandma\u2019s House of Pancakes<\/strong>) and New Roxy<\/strong> (the inside, front bar area at 363 Issaquena Avenue).<\/span><\/p>\n

Lucious Spiller<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Bluesmen Lucious Spiller<\/strong> and Sean \u201cBad\u201d Apple<\/strong> will perform at the daily 5 pm reception at Grandma\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n

Admission is just $5 daily thanks to sponsors that include Clarksdale-Coahoma County Tourism<\/strong> and Clarksdale Public Utilities<\/strong>, among several others. A ticket includes all official events at both theaters.<\/span><\/p>\n

After the film screenings and official events each day, attendees can go out on the town for live blues at places like Red\u2019s Lounge<\/strong> and Ground Zero Blues Club<\/strong> (cover charges may apply).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSince we\u2019re Clarksdale, Mississippi, we have live blues seven nights a week, every week,\u201d said Stolle. \u201cWe hope that music and film fans will come in for the movies but stay for the blues.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
