Rebel Golfer Claims Title by Nearly 1,000 points<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ole Miss<\/strong> men\u2019s golfer Braden Thornberry<\/strong> was named the AmatuerGolf.com Men\u2019s Player of the Year<\/strong> after turning in multiple top finishes throughout 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis game has been so special to me,\u201d Thornberry said. \u201cMy game has gone to a new level, and I have learned so much.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A new level it was, Thornberry\u2019s year consisted of titles to three of amateur\u2019s golf biggest championships, to claim the honor by nearly 1,000 points ahead of Doug Ghim<\/strong> of Arlington Heights, Illinois<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thornberry began his year with two first-place finishes, first at the Jones Cup<\/strong> in Sea Island<\/strong>, Georgia<\/strong>, and then the Ryman Hospitality Intercollegiate<\/strong> by 13 strokes. In April, he found top-five finishes at both the SEC Championship<\/strong> and the NCAA South Central Regional<\/strong>, which advanced him to claim the title at the NCAA Championships, wrapping up his sophomore campaign at Ole Miss.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is another outstanding honor for Braden,\u201d head coach Chris Malloy<\/strong> said. \u201cHe has continued to work extremely hard even after all of his successes, and this is just the start of a very special golf career for him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The NCAA Champion title came with a long list of awards as Thornberry became the first Rebel in Ole Miss history to win the Haskins Award<\/strong>, given to the most outstanding men\u2019s collegiate golfer. He was named a PING Division I First Team All-American<\/strong>, a member of the All-Nicklaus Team<\/strong>, the All-SEC First Team<\/strong>, and the PING Southeast All-Regional Team<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thornberry didn\u2019t stop there. In early June, the Olive Branch<\/strong>, Mississippi\u2013native showed out in his first pro event, the PGA Tour\u2019s FedEx St. Jude Classic<\/strong>, finishing in a tie for fourth, just two shot behind the winner Daniel Berger<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

He then went on to shine throughout the summer competing in the Sunnehanna Amateur<\/strong> (won the tournament), the PGA Tour\u2019s Greenbrier Classic<\/strong>, the Pacific Coast Amateur<\/strong>, and the US Amateur<\/strong> before being named to the United States Walker Cup Team<\/strong>, which he would later help his country win.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the fall of his junior campaign, Thornberry worked victories at both the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate<\/strong> (by eight stokes) and the Franklin American Mortgage Intercollegiate<\/strong> (by five strokes), before he would play in his third PGA Tour event of the year, the RSM Classic<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n
