{"id":43359,"date":"2017-12-07T12:51:13","date_gmt":"2017-12-07T18:51:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=43359"},"modified":"2017-12-07T12:51:13","modified_gmt":"2017-12-07T18:51:13","slug":"oxford-film-festival-announces-competition-and-contest-winners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/oxford-film-festival-announces-competition-and-contest-winners\/","title":{"rendered":"Oxford Film Festival Announces Competition and Contest Winners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">At a special preview party on Sunday, December 3, the <strong>Oxford Film Festival<\/strong> announced initial details of next year\u2019s 15th Anniversary edition, including a special work-in-progress screening of <strong>Cassidy Friedman<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Circles<\/em>, the winners of OFF\u2019s inaugural screenplay competition and <strong>Artist Vodka<\/strong> contest, as well as this year\u2019s <strong>Magnifying Glass fellowship<\/strong> recipient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In addition, a Seed &amp; Spark Fundraising campaign for $8,000 has been launched\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">to complete the funding for the 2018 edition of the popular film festival. More information can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/oxford-film-festival-crowdfunding-campaign-is-live\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Melanie Addington<\/strong>, executive director of the Oxford Film Festival, said, \u201cIn our fifteenth year, the Oxford Film Festival will continue to put our best foot forward when it comes to inspiring the discussion of important and timely socio-political issues and topics through our films. We have become a rallying point not just for artists in the state of Mississippi, but also for speaking out on the issues and on behalf of the underserved people of our state and elsewhere. <em>Circles<\/em> is a great example of a film that provides a wonderful jumping off point for precisely that type of talk. We are also thrilled to debut our screenplay competition and partner\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">with Artist Vodka to continue to not just inspire filmmakers, but offer significant cash rewards for their wonderful work, as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Friedman\u2019s <em>Circles<\/em>, tracks a <strong>Hurricane Katrina<\/strong> survivor who is a pioneer of the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Restorative Justice<\/strong> movement in <strong>Oakland<\/strong> schools working to keep black\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">teenagers in school. However, when his own son is wrongfully accused, he\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">suddenly finds his personal and professional lives collide. The screening will be\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">co-presented by the <strong>Mississippi Humanities Council<\/strong>, and following the screening<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">will be a discussion with Friedman and film subject <strong>Eric Butler<\/strong>, in partnership with\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">the <strong>William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43361\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43361\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Circles_preview.jpeg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-43361\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Circles_preview.jpeg?resize=600%2C337\" alt=\"Circles\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43361\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Circles<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The first winner of the OFF\u2019s inaugural screenplay competition is <strong>John\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Matthew Tyson<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Twirling at Ole Miss<\/em>, and the runner up is <strong>John Bateman<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Not Everything Was Burning<\/em>. Both scripts will have a live table read on\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Wednesday, February 7 at the festival, with the writer of <em>Twirling at Ole Miss<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">receiving $1000, a flight and hotel accommodations at Oxford, and mentorship\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">from <strong>John Norris<\/strong>, film producer of such films as <em>Get On Up<\/em>, <em>The Help<\/em>, and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">the upcoming <em>American Pain<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Magnifying Glass Fellowship winner <strong>Robbie Fisher<\/strong> and co-director <strong>Jenni Smith<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">will world premiere their micro-short with the working title <em>Dear Mr Bryant<\/em> on\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Wednesday, February 7. Fisher received $1,000 to assist with production costs.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In the film, Mississippi religious leaders share their informed and heartfelt\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">thoughts in telling Mississippi Governor <strong>Phil Bryant<\/strong> why he was wrong to fight for\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">and sign into law the controversial and extreme piece of anti-LGBTQ legislation<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">known simply as <strong>H.B. 1523<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Nation-Down-Artist-Vodka-Winner_preview.jpeg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-43367\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Nation-Down-Artist-Vodka-Winner_preview.jpeg?resize=300%2C217\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" \/><\/a>Liam Hendrix Heath<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Nation Down<\/em>, which depicts a nightmarish world ruled\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">by a manipulative king risking his rule in a warped bid for companionship, won\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">the Artist Vodka competition. Heath will receive a grand prize of $5,000, along\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">with flight and hotel covered to attend the festival. <strong>Tracy S. Facelli<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Favorites<\/em>, about a man coping with the sudden death of his wife via the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">happy memories brought about by eating his favorite dessert that she had made\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">for him prior to her death, was the runner up in the contest. Facelli received hotel\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">accommodations to attend the OFF as part of her prize package. In order to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">be eligible for the competition, the films were required to be less than 25 minutes\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">and must incorporate one of the following: Artist Vodka mentioned verbally, a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">character wearing an Artist Vodka t-shirt, placement of Artist Vodka bottle in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">foreground in a scene, or the Artist Vodka logo in the opening credits.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Addington added, \u201cThe Oxford Film Festival has always had a clear and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">dedicated objective to promote and celebrate the work of filmmakers local to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Mississippi. Giving those filmmakers an opportunity to show their work and be\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">discovered by our audiences, as well as make connections with other filmmakers\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">leading them to future work has been one of most important aspects of this film\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">festival for going on fifteen years now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Four feature films will lead the way for Mississippi-based productions chosen as\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">official selections for the 2018 Oxford Film Festival. Those films include <strong>Jeff\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Dennis<\/strong>\u2019 <em>The Process: The Way of Pablo Sierra<\/em> about a potter, baker,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">and horseman who lived in <strong>Yocona<\/strong>, Mississippi. Born in <strong>Spain<\/strong>, Sierra came to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ole Miss on track scholarship, eventually becoming the man he is today. <strong>Astin\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Rocks<\/strong>\u2019 <em>Love Soliloquy: A Visual Album<\/em> uses avant-garde storytelling to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">reveal the psyche behind young women navigating their relationships. <strong>Timothy\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Givens<\/strong> and <strong>Mark K. Brockway<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Mississippi Madam<\/em>: <em>The Life of Nellie Jackson<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0profiles an African-American woman born into poverty in Possum<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Corner, Mississippi, who opened a brothel in Natchez, Mississippi and ran it for\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">more than 60 years with full knowledge of police and Natchez officials until a fiery\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">end one hot July night in 1990.
