{"id":42742,"date":"2017-11-09T00:04:03","date_gmt":"2017-11-09T06:04:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=42742"},"modified":"2017-11-09T09:35:43","modified_gmt":"2017-11-09T15:35:43","slug":"carlton-smith-the-social-justice-candidate-for-district-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/carlton-smith-the-social-justice-candidate-for-district-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Carlton Smith: The Social Justice Candidate for District 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Headshot.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-42745 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Headshot.jpg?resize=300%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Carlton Smith<\/strong> is a Holly Springs native, Howard University Alumni, and he wants to bring a sense of social justice to the District 1 seat. After leaving Holy Springs for college and then spending much of his adult life in the <strong>Washington D.C.<\/strong>, metro <strong>New York<\/strong>, and <strong>Greater Boston<\/strong> area he headed back home to <strong>Mississippi<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;I believe that is one of the benefits of my candidacy, that I have experience outside of the state that can be brought back to Mississippi and be leveraged for the benefit of Mississippians,&#8221; said Smith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Smith is still fine tuning his exact platform around the issues that he hears his fellow Mississippians raising.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThe large issues I\u2019m hearing about have to do with education of our young people, healthcare, and employment opportunities, so those are the things I\u2019m focusing on,\u201d said Smith. \u201cThose issues are interwoven because employers coming to the area are interested in having employees and employees are interested in having quality schools for their children and opportunities for good healthcare.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Smith outlined his plan for tackling the concerns of his constituents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt would take on a coupe different approaches,\u201d said Smith. \u201cOne is figuring out how we can increase opportunities and make it attractive for people who might even be independent contractors to move here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Smith also references that increasing the availability of reliable internet access as a way to bring more work to the state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI work for a denomination called the Unitarian Universalist Association which is based in Boston,\u201d said Smith. \u201cBecause I work regionally and have good access to internet I am able to work remotely from North Mississippi\u2026but in our overwhelmingly rural district access is spotty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Rural internet access fees typically run high and Smith is aware of this which pushes net neutrality to the forefront for him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI think that net neutrality is very important so that the consumer can have access to the internet,\u201d said Smith. \u201cThat is one of the things I would be strongly advocating for.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">As with most modern campaigns, Smith plans to hit social media hard to spread information and awareness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI\u2019ll be using electronic communication to reach out to people online through my website and through twitter,\u201d said Smith. \u201cAs we\u2019ve seen with the current administration in Washington they\u2019ve been very effective at getting information out through social media so that will be key to connecting with people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">With the limited internet access in mind, Smith is ready for some old-fashioned campaigning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe\u2019ll be creating opportunities for personal, face to face encounters as well,\u201d said Smith. \u201cI\u2019m looking at staying connected with democratic leaders in each of the counties and using my informal network of friends, family, and associates. I want to make myself available.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Smith feels what sets himself apart fellow democratic candidate <strong>Randy Watkins<\/strong> is his strong focus on social-justice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cRandy is running on primarily a science platform, and I am a pro-science person, but what I\u2019m bringing to the equation is my commitment to social-justice and social-activism as well as being in touch with people from that stand point and working from that angle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/protest.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"335\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-42746\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/protest.jpg?resize=640%2C335\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">During the <strong>Unite-the-Right<\/strong> rally in <strong>Charlottesville<\/strong>, Smith was protesting the alt-right assembly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI was one of the clergy that were part of the peaceful, non-violent protest,\u201d said Smith. \u201cIt was a day of making life and death choices. I could very much feel that from moment to moment.
