Charlie Buckley will exhibit new paintings at Southside Gallery from October 2\u2013November 4.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Buckley is best known for his work inspired by the Southern landscape such as tree lines and the floodplains as well as scenes from cities like Nashville, Oxford<\/strong>, and Jackson<\/strong>. His show will feature 24 new paintings, including three from a relatively new series he began two years ago titled, \u201cStacked Houses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The paintings from Buckley\u2019s \u201cStacked Houses\u201d series were initially in response to the destruction from the 2014 tornado that wrecked the artist\u2019s hometown of Tupelo<\/strong>, Mississippi, but the narrative has since evolved. The paintings are similar conceptually and compositionally\u2014stacked houses of varying architectural styles montaged to create a monolithic structure\u2014to the original paintings, but have become larger in scale and more complex. Buckley has also enhanced some of the compositions with patterned borders that mimic textile design. The paintings are commentary on climate, class, and the domestic environmental landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n

A grid composed of fourteen 16 x16-inch paintings of varied subject matter will also be on display. Traditional landscapes, Oxford cityscapes, and botanical paintings comprise these smaller works. Though the paintings will be available individually, the grid will be a single composition for the duration of the exhibition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Charlie Buckley holds a BFA from the University of Mississippi<\/strong> and an MFA from Miami (OH) University<\/strong>. He has taught painting and drawing at Miami University, Mississippi State University<\/strong>, and the University of Mississippi. Buckley received a Fellowship in Visual Arts from the Mississippi Arts Commission<\/strong> in 2010. His work was recently added to the Walton Family Foundation<\/strong>. This will be Buckley\u2019s sixth exhibition at Southside Gallery.<\/span><\/p>\n
