{"id":41799,"date":"2017-09-20T11:29:16","date_gmt":"2017-09-20T17:29:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=41799"},"modified":"2017-09-20T11:29:16","modified_gmt":"2017-09-20T17:29:16","slug":"local-law-enforcement-trained-to-administer-life-saving-medication","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/local-law-enforcement-trained-to-administer-life-saving-medication\/","title":{"rendered":"Local Law Enforcement Trained to Administer Life-Saving Medication"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>Mississippi Department of Mental Health<\/strong> (DMH) is partnering with the <strong>Oxford Police Department<\/strong>, <strong>Lafayette County Sheriff<\/strong>\u2019s Department, <strong>University Police Department<\/strong>, and the <strong>3<\/strong><\/span><strong>rd<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> Judicial District Drug Court<\/strong> to provide <strong>naloxone <\/strong>(narcan), a life-saving medication that blocks or reverses the effects of opioid overdoses.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Services<\/strong> within DMH is providing the naloxone through funding provided by the <strong>State Targeted Response<\/strong> <strong>to the Opioid Crisis<\/strong> grant awarded as part of the <strong>21<\/strong><\/span><strong>st<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> Century Cures Act<\/strong> passed by <strong>Congress<\/strong> in December 2016. This partnership with local law enforcement agencies is consistent with final recommendations made by the <strong>Governor\u2019s Opioid and Heroin Study Task Force<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIn Mississippi, about one out of every 10 people misuses prescription drugs in some way,\u201d said <strong>Michael Jordan<\/strong>, the State Opioid Treatment Authority with DMH. \u201cThe abuse of prescription drugs has led to a surge in opioid and heroin addiction, and this is an issue that is costing people their lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/narcan-explained.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"405\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41801\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/narcan-explained.jpg?resize=600%2C405\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Naloxone is a medication that can block or reverse the effects of opioids, particularly in an overdose situation. While there are no adverse effects to administering naloxone to someone in distress, it is important to note that its use is not a substitute for emergency medical care, which should be administered as soon as possible after a suspected overdose or use of naloxone.
