Big Easy soulful indie rockers, Darcy Malone and The Tangle<\/strong>\u2019s latest release is a four track EP called\u00a0Make Me Over,\u00a0<\/em>which features their new single \u201cTime To Be Free.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>The record is a fresher and bolder continuation of their bigger than life sound, which was first heard last year when they released their debut album,\u00a0Still Life<\/em>. Once again, the band effectively combines their eclectic influences of New Orleans funk, soul, pop and rock into four distinct and catchy songs recorded at legendary Louisiana recording mecca Studio In The Country.<\/span><\/p>\n

The EP\u2019s title,\u00a0Make Me Over,<\/em>\u00a0is a reference to the band\u2019s journey over the past twelve months, which includes a revised line up with the addition of lead guitarist John Paul Carmody<\/strong>. He is one of the few performers in the world that have won back-to back weeks at the Apollo Theater<\/strong>\u2019s legendary amateur night. Carmody has played alongside well-known New Orleans<\/strong>\u2019 musicians including South Jones<\/strong>, Papa Mali<\/strong> as well as Johnny Sketch and The Dirty Notes<\/strong>. The record also pertains to lead singer Darcy Malone\u2019s own personal makeover, which involved embarking on a weight loss program that led to her losing 68 pounds. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAll of these songs tell a story of where we are,\u201d says Malone. \u201cWe are the newest version of ourselves, which is what we are trying to be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The EP\u2019s first single\u00a0\u201c<\/em>Time To Be Free,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0is a powerful soul, rock and gospel anthem, which exemplifies the band\u2019s unique wall of sound. Etta James<\/strong>, Tina Turner,<\/strong> and Janis Joplin<\/strong> can be heard in Darcy Malone\u2019s heartfelt and soaring vocal performance as she sings about undergoing a journey of change that ultimately leads to self-acceptance. Billy Schell\u2019s fierce drum riff fires off the EP\u2019s title track\u00a0\u201c<\/em>Make Me Over,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0a catchy funky rock song, which transitions back and forth from samba to funk.\u00a0\u201c<\/em>You\u2019ll See,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0is a soulful pop song, which further builds on the theme of self-acceptance. Meanwhile, guitarist Chris Boye<\/strong> lends lead vocals on\u00a0\u201c<\/em>Never Wanna See You Alone,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0which is his self-penned tribute to New York\u2019s 80\u2019s music scene including legends Debbie Harry<\/strong>, Television<\/strong> and Talking Heads<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n
