These photographs were shot by Oxford, Mississippi<\/strong> photographer Newt Rayburn<\/strong> in New Orleans, Louisiana<\/strong> on January 2, 2016. <\/span><\/p>\n

This sculpture of Jefferson Davis<\/strong><\/a> was designed and built by\u00a0Richmond, Virginia<\/strong> artist Edward Virginius Valentine<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in the early 1900’s. <\/span><\/p>\n

The United Daughters of the Confederacy<\/strong> commissioned the statue and requested that\u00a0Davis appear \u201cas a statesman, standing and addressing the people.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

The bronze statue stood just over eight feet tall and was mounted on a thirteen square foot granite pedestal. <\/span><\/p>\n

Separate from the monument was a site dedication stone that was dated June 3, 1908.<\/span><\/p>\n

The monument was officially dedicated on February 22, 1911 and stood at the intersection of Canal Boulevard<\/strong> and Jefferson Davis Parkway<\/strong> for 106 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the early morning hours of Thursday, May 11, 2017, under the cover of darkness, a clandestine SWAT squad and over 300 armed police mobilized by the City of New Orleans<\/strong>\u00a0hastily removed the monument<\/a> and took it to an unknown location.\u00a0\"The<\/span><\/p>\n
