{"id":39389,"date":"2017-05-03T08:00:19","date_gmt":"2017-05-03T14:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=39389"},"modified":"2017-05-03T08:37:23","modified_gmt":"2017-05-03T14:37:23","slug":"monday-movie-nights-at-the-delta-blues-museum-start-may-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/monday-movie-nights-at-the-delta-blues-museum-start-may-22\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Movie Nights at the Delta Blues Museum Start May 22"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>In honor of Mississippi&#8217;s 2017 Bicentennial, the Delta Blues Museum will present a monthly outdoor film series that reflects the state&#8217;s rich musical heritage. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The monthly series, &#8220;Monday Movie Nights: Celebrating Mississippi&#8217;s Music History and Heritage,&#8221; begins on Monday, May 22 and will run through September. This official bicentennial project was made possible by a grant from the\u00a0<strong>Mississippi Humanities Council<\/strong>, through support from the\u00a0<strong>Mississippi Development Authority<\/strong>. Films will be shown on the museum&#8217;s outdoor stage, and will be free to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Our goal is to help our audience understand the influence that musicians from our state and the Delta region have had on music and the arts, and this series will provide an outlet where the community can come together to celebrate this contribution,&#8221; said Museum Director <strong>Shelley Ritter<\/strong>. &#8220;We want to create community support that will ultimately sustain the series as an annual series through donations and event volunteers. We envision the event growing to include bi-monthly films and perhaps food trucks that highlight a different local restaurant each month.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A brief discussion and\/or &#8220;Question and Answer&#8221; session will be held prior to each screening, providing the audience context as to the movie&#8217;s connection to Delta Blues music as well as background on the importance of the film and its time and place in cinematic history. <strong>Clarksdale<\/strong>\u00a0filmmaker and critic <strong>Coop Cooper<\/strong> will facilitate these discussions with a variety of panelists including academic representatives from <strong>Coahoma Community College<\/strong> and <strong>Delta State University<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Featured films will be tied to museum exhibits and activities, beginning with <strong>Robert Johnson Month<\/strong>\u00a0in May and including <strong>John Lee Hooker Month<\/strong>\u00a0in August.\u00a0In case of inclement weather, the films will be shown in the upstairs meeting room of the museum, which is ADA accessible. Guests are encouraged to bring their own seating\u2014each screening will start at approximately.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><strong>May 22 &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><em>Crossroads<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<strong>(1986)<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> May is Robert Johnson Month at Delta Blues Museum, and this film is loosely based on the myth of his &#8220;selling his soul at the Crossroads.&#8221; During the month of May, the Museum will feature an exhibit of <strong>Kim Rushing<\/strong>&#8216;s photographs of <strong>Parchman Farm<\/strong> and a presentation by <strong>Jerry Jenkins<\/strong> on West African drumming. Cupcakes, provided by <strong>Kroger<\/strong>, will be served to visitors on May 8, the birthday of Robert.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><strong>June 19 &#8211;<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>Ode to Billy Joe<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0(1976)<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> Based on the song written by Mississippian <strong>Bobbie Gentry<\/strong>, the film tells the fictional story of &#8220;the day that Billy Joe McCallister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge,&#8221; which is located within an hour of Clarksdale. Museum highlights will feature an Artist Spotlight on <strong>Tallahatchie County<\/strong>&#8216;s own <strong>Sonny Boy Williamson<\/strong> as well as an exhibit on <strong>Sonny Boy<\/strong> in the gallery along with a &#8220;King Biscuit Time.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><strong>July 24 &#8211;<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>Jailhouse Rock<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>(1957)<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> The classic feature, starring <strong>Elvis Presley<\/strong>, showcases the influence of blues on Elvis&#8217; music. The Museum will also feature the exhibit &#8220;30 years of the Sunflower River Blues &amp; Gospel Festival&#8221; throughout the month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><strong>August 21 &#8211;<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>The Blues Brothers<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>(1980)<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> August is John Lee Hooker Month at the Museum, and the blues legend makes an appearance in this iconic film&#8211;as do many other Mississippi blues artists. August 22, 2017, marks what would have been Hooker&#8217;s centennial birthday. Museum events planned for August include 30th\u00a0Annual Sunflower River Blues &amp; Gospel Festival performances and a special exhibit of John Lee Hooker artifacts and memorabilia in the Museum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><strong>September 18 &#8211;<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>Cadillac Records<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>(2008)<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> Loosely based on the story of <strong>Chess Records<\/strong>, the film focuses on the record label that gave birth to numerous Mississippi blues artists including <strong>Muddy Waters<\/strong>, <strong>Howlin&#8217; Wolf<\/strong>, <strong>Willie Dixon<\/strong> and others.
