Fussell, however, has never written an original song. That\u2019s not to say he\u2019s turning gentle folk songs in club hits, his style is still very much set in folk sensibilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThese were songs that are special to me and that I want to play pretty frequently,\u201d said Fussell. \u201cWhen you\u2019re making a record you have to be very selective and these are the ones that really stood up. There was enough diversity that it worked out well and in that you start to see themes rise up that are typically unplanned. Things always come together in a funny way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Considering Fussell\u2019s background his interest in reimagining folk tunes sounds right in line. After moving to North Carolina in 2015 he found work with a local record shop, <strong>Carolina Soul<\/strong>. While he has not stumbled across any songs that he wanted to do renditions of, the collection is inspiring all the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt has turned me on to a lot of records I wouldn\u2019t have sought out myself,\u201d said Fussell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Since Fussell was a small boy accompanying his father, a folklorist and museum curator, on trips to visit those who still practice traditional American arts, he has always been drawn to that early 20th century era of history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cBoth my parents have been involved in folk lore, so I grew up in an environment where people were thinking about music and art in a historical sense,\u201d said Fussell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">With this upbringing, it makes sense that his creative and scholarly sides meld so seamlessly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhen I got into music as a kid and started playing . . . it was natural for me to put it in that context because of my dad\u2019s work,\u201d said Fussell. \u201cIt\u2019s hard for me to distinguish the two, in a way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The time Fussell spends working on new music would be hard to discern from a historian\u2019s research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cMy musical interests have always had a historical dent because those two things feed each other,\u201d said Fussell. \u201cThere\u2019s a symbiotic relationship. My intellectual interest in music buttresses my creative impulses and vice-versa.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/2017-4-4-Jake-Xerxes-Fussell.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" class=\"size-full wp-image-38784 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/2017-4-4-Jake-Xerxes-Fussell.jpg?resize=600%2C400\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/2017-4-4-Jake-Xerxes-Fussell.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/2017-4-4-Jake-Xerxes-Fussell.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This combination of interests led him to enroll in <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong>\u2019 <strong>Southern Studies<\/strong> program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhen I was studying at Ole Miss I could be reading about a certain time and reference a narrative ballad about that event,\u201d said Fussell. \u201cPlaying music gives you a unique perspective inside a song.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Fussell\u2019s time in Oxford ran from 2005 to 2015. Over the course of that decade he racked up a grocery list of gigs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cMy first show was actually at Longshot,\u201d said Fussell. \u201cThen Randy Yates hired me to play a few shows at Ajax.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">From there things began to snowball for the artist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI met Jim Dickinson who was involved with Thacker Mountain but is also this amazing producer. I started playing guitar with Reverend John Wilkins who is a Memphis gospel guy and a preacher in Como, Mississippi.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">After that Fussell found himself with some of the <strong>Hill Country Blues<\/strong> players.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI was immersed in the scene in my own way, but I was mostly just dabbling in stuff. I\u2019d occasionally play solo gigs at Ajax,\u201d said Fussell. \u201cAt some point Slade Lewis asked me to get involved with Thacker Mountain, so I started playing full time as the house band leader.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The gig was a perfect fit for someone like Fussell, who wanted to expand his repertoire as much as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cYou have to come up with a few songs to play every week that you didn\u2019t play last week, so it\u2019s a good challenge,\u201d said Fussell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">On April 8 catch Jake Xerxes Fussell at <strong>End of All Music<\/strong> for a free <a href=\"http:\/\/theendofallmusic.com\/jake-xerxes-fussell-in-store-show-april-8th\/\">in store performance<\/a> and then later that evening at <strong>Proud Larrys\u2019<\/strong>.
