New ownership will take over starting April 1, 2017, but the restaurant\u2019s name and branding will remain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt\u2019s bittersweet, but it\u2019s just time,\u201d said Buck. \u201cThis would have been my 15th football season, and it\u2019s something I\u2019ve been thinking about for a while. [The buyers] love the Rib Cage and what we do. They\u2019ll make a few changes here and there, but it will stay the Rib Cage. They\u2019ve got some great ideas; it\u2019s just time to pass the torch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Buck confirmed that the downstairs bar will continue to host live music on the weekends and the overall vibe of the place will not change. Rib Cage has always been a personal favorite for me. When I moved to Oxford in 2004, my first job waiting tables was at the Cage. I know I am not alone when I say that the place holds many, many fond (and a few wild) memories. Buck agreed. Some of his favorite memories included his first days of business and his first football season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/2015Faves-RibCage.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-20164\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/2015Faves-RibCage.jpg?resize=400%2C517\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"517\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/2015Faves-RibCage.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/2015Faves-RibCage.jpg?resize=232%2C300&amp;ssl=1 232w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhen you just kind of sit over in the corner and watch something that you had a lot of faith in and watch your ideas start to work\u2014that\u2019s one of the coolest things,\u201d he said. \u201cSo many friendships have been made here, and there are a lot of good stories in this joint. Who knew\u2014hot beer, cold food, and crappy service.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">With over 20 years of ownership, Walden has certainly done his time in the restaurant biz. He bought the <strong>Tupelo<\/strong> Rib Cage in 1997, which closed in 2007, and opened the Oxford location in 2003. \u201cTime just clicks on by, doesn\u2019t it?\u201d Walden said. \u201cI got here on my 35th birthday, and here I am staring at my 49th. I\u2019m kind of tired, from the grind of it. None of my problems are any more than anyone else\u2019s, because I\u2019m sure everyone else who owns a restaurant gets ground down, too. I had a chance [to sell], and these guys made a decent offer, so we\u2019ll see what\u2019s next.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">What\u2019s next for Buck right now is to \u201ctake a deep breath, play some golf, and detox.\u201d He\u2019s looking forward to a little time to reset and figure out his plans for the future. He told me that he\u2019s heard interest in opening back up in Tupelo, or even\u00a0<strong>Pickwick<\/strong>, or his hometown of <strong>Corinth<\/strong>. But he\u2019ll be hanging around in Oxford for a while first. &#8220;Unless someone is hiring in Oxford, because I can be a fabulous daytime bartender,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Buck has also seen first-hand the changes in the Oxford restaurant landscape over the years. I asked him if the seemingly nonstop additions of new, corporate restaurants influenced his decision to sell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cA little bit,\u201d he said. \u201cSeveral people and I have talked about it\u2014[restaurant] owners, food guys, and stuff\u2014that there\u2019s just too many restaurants in this town. I was down on West Jackson the other day . . . and literally from McDonald\u2019s to where Pizza Hut used to be\u2014counting convenience stores\u2014off the top of my head I counted 18 places where you can eat within three quarters of a mile.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Although this abundance of food choices in Oxford gives us a lot of options come lunchtime, I have to wonder if the town can support the flood of new places that seem to pop up weekly. Will other longtime local owners decide to move on in the coming years?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Walden was sure to count his blessings. \u201cI\u2019ve been lucky, you know,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve held in there. I\u2019m sure [Scott] Caradine, Jim [Bulian], and even [John] Desler know that it\u2019s a daily battle. You just kind of show up and get ready to fight. Just do your thing.
