Mr. BM is the alter ego of local musician <strong>Bill Perry, Jr<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI had an old project called Bill Mysterio and this is somewhat of an extension of that,\u201d said Perry. \u201cBill Mysterium is the more mature, sophisticated evolution of Mysterio. He\u2019s like a combination of James Earl Jones and James Bond. Mr. BM is cool as hell.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"mrbm1.bandcamp.com\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-38517 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/MR-BM-cover.jpg?resize=205%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"205\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/MR-BM-cover.jpg?resize=205%2C300&amp;ssl=1 205w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/MR-BM-cover.jpg?resize=768%2C1127&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/MR-BM-cover.jpg?resize=698%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 698w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/MR-BM-cover.jpg?w=818&amp;ssl=1 818w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 205px) 100vw, 205px\" \/><\/a>The project came to life through an almost stream-of-conscious approach over the span of nine days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt was a maddening process,\u201d said Perry. \u201cI wrote the tracks in the order they appear on the album. When I was making the album I figured the tracks would be reordered somewhat, but I realized by about the fourth track that this was their order.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The album addresses topics ranging from current politics to the world\u2019s need for online attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cTrack three, &#8216;Praying For a Better Day,&#8217; came from watching all the violence spreading,\u201d said Perry. \u201cThe eighth actual song, &#8216;When I Die,&#8217; is aimed at how we interact on the internet. When a celebrity dies we all post photos, but what are we really posting them for? Is it just for attention or is it rooted in something deeper?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>9 Days<\/em> is as much an album as it is Bill Mysterium\u2019s thesis on the current state of societal affairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI wanted to combine my hip hop and jazz ideas and express what I was seeing out in the world. I consider myself part of the resistance,\u201d said Perry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Despite heated topics, the album is not a platform for anger. Track nine, &#8220;Let Go,&#8221; revolves around the hook of To reach new heights you must let go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt is really as simple as that,\u201d said Perry. \u201cI wanted to hammer that point in, over and over. To reach new heights you must let go. All this arguing on Facebook\u2014and I\u2019ve done it too\u2014it doesn\u2019t get you anywhere. You just have to let it go.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cLet Go\u201d also includes the line, &#8220;You must read Thich Nhat Hanh.&#8221; <strong>Thich Nhat Hanh<\/strong>, a Buddhist monk and peace activist, is a heavy influence on the entire album. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Alongside Thich Nhat Hanh, in terms of influence, is the <strong>14th Dalai Lama<\/strong>. His influence is most represented on Track eleven, \u201cForgiveness &amp; Compassion\u201d where Bill Mysterium recites his words\u00a0verbatim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI\u2019m not even gonna say that I reference him there,\u201d said Perry. \u201cThose are his\u00a0words.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>9 Days<\/em> is a showcase of Perry\u2019s influences, and not just in lyrical content. The instrumentals vary from modern trap to the classic boom bap sound in which hip hop is rooted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cA lot young bucks just want to talk about stuff that happened down the street,\u201d said Perry. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to think bigger though. People outside of that world can\u2019t relate. Expand your mind just a little bit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Perry has without a doubt expanded his comfort zone with this album. Most will only know him as the jazz pianist and not as an MC and producer. <em>9 Days<\/em> has allowed him to branch out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThere\u2019s people that have known me for a long time that don\u2019t even know this side of me. They just know me as Bill Perry the piano player,\u201d said Perry. \u201cI wasn\u2019t trying to sell myself as a player. I did all the arrangements. I really found the composer and songwriter in myself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">With Perry working mostly in instrumentals, writing lyrics was something he was excited to dive into.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI was actually approaching it with prose like a writer,\u201d said Perry. \u201cI wanted to make the words mean more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Perry considers <em>9 Days<\/em> to be his most comprehensive and representative work to date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThis could very well be my best work,\u201d said Perry. \u201cUp to this point I have had the fans that know me for my hip hop and rap work and there are fans that only know me for my Bill Perry Trio stuff.
