{"id":38208,"date":"2017-03-09T08:30:35","date_gmt":"2017-03-09T14:30:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=38208"},"modified":"2017-03-07T14:58:42","modified_gmt":"2017-03-07T20:58:42","slug":"the-powerhouse-screens-best-of-oxford-film-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/the-powerhouse-screens-best-of-oxford-film-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"The Powerhouse screens &#8220;Best of Oxford Film Festival&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Oxford Film Festival<\/strong> is over but Oxford moviegoers can still catch the screenings of the \u201cBest Of,\u201d <strong>The Powerhouse<\/strong> will host a screening of six films March 16 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. the screening is free but donations are encouraged. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The six films include <em>Some Freaks<\/em>, <strong><em>Firemax<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Goodbye Neenaw<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Otha Turner<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Paco<\/em><\/strong>,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">and <strong><em>Fox and the Whale<\/em><\/strong>, all six are Hoka winners at the 2017 festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/filming-firemax-an-oxford-community-film-debuts-february-15-at-the-powerhouse\/\"><em>Firemax<\/em><\/a>, the first film to run, is an Oxford community film, written and directed by <strong>Rory Ledbetter<\/strong>.\u00a0 The film is set and filmed in Oxford, and tells the story of what happens when there is no crime for a superhero to fight. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The second film to run is <em>Goodbye Neenaw<\/em>, which won for Best Narrative Short. Directed by <strong>Donald Ian Black<\/strong>, <em>Goodbye Neenaw<\/em> follows a brother and sister traveling into the California mountains to scatter the ashes of their grandmother.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Also showing is winner of Best Mississippi Short Film <em>Otha Turner<\/em>. This short documentary <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">takes place in Gravel Springs, Mississippi and digs into the archives to travel back to Labor Day <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">1978. Winner of Best New Media <em>Paco<\/em> will be the fourth film of the night to be shown at Best of Oxford.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>The Fox and the Whale<\/em> directed by <strong>Robin Joseph<\/strong> won the Hoka for Best Animation. The film is <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">the tale of a curious fox who goes in search of an elusive whale. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The feature film <em>Some Freaks<\/em> won Best Narrative Feature Film and was directed by <strong>Ian<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>MacAllister-McDonald<\/strong>. The film to close out the event follows the love story of a one-eyed high <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">school senior and a 250-pound girl and how their relationship plays out during college when Jill loses weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The total run time of this event is two hours and forty-four minutes with an intermission after the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">short films. Concessions and beer will be available for purchase. The event is free but donations <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">are accepted. The films are friendly to families with some adult themes for 14 and up in <em>Some <\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Freaks<\/em>.
