{"id":37625,"date":"2017-01-24T16:26:43","date_gmt":"2017-01-24T22:26:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=37625"},"modified":"2017-01-24T16:26:43","modified_gmt":"2017-01-24T22:26:43","slug":"luthi-wants-you-to-dance-at-proud-larrys-february-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/luthi-wants-you-to-dance-at-proud-larrys-february-1\/","title":{"rendered":"LUTHI Wants You to Dance at Proud Larrys&#8217; February 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>LUTHI<\/strong> is a rising funk act from <strong>Nashville<\/strong>, <strong>Tennessee<\/strong>. The band consists of anywhere from seven to nine members on stage at a time, the majority of which have known each other for nearly a decade. Singer <strong>Christian Luthi<\/strong> and guitarist <strong>Taylor Ivey<\/strong> joined us to chat about their progression as a band and how they ended up in the genre they are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI went to school at Belmont with one of Luthi\u2019s good friends,\u201d said Ivey. \u201cWe met and since then have been playing together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Over the years, the cast of musicians has rotated in and out but the core group of friends have been a constant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThe lineup really solidified a couple years ago,\u201d said Luthi. \u201cIt was around then that we really all just clicked into what we were trying to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Part of their unified movement came from changing the name of the project from Christian Luthi to LUTHI. This change represented them moving away from the singer songwriter style and more towards the funk sound you can hear on their 2016 EP <em>Home Again.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI enjoy doing stuff in that realm and at times it can prove to be more lucrative than doing something weird\u2026but there\u2019s just so much of that going on in the city,\u201d said Luthi. \u201cOnce in a while we\u2019d play a show and put the whole band together and it would go really well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This pushed LUTHI to make the full move.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI\u2019ve done musical theater my entire life, so I really enjoy performing,\u201d said Luthi. \u201cAt some point I got really beat up playing these small, shitty acoustic shows where no one showed up and not getting people to get down. About three years ago we started to dig in to it that we could do something weird here that sounds really different and people are catching on to it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Their move into the funk arena has proven to be a very successful venture thus far.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe pride ourselves after this move into the dance realm and the funk realm of making people dance in Nashville,\u201d said Ivey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">They make sure to state that they by no means aim to put down Nashville, the city that has helped them this far.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe wouldn\u2019t be anywhere without it,\u201d said Luthi. \u201cWe have an absolute blast playing here at Acme where people come from all around, ultimately, the world. It\u2019s really just cool to see people that aren\u2019t musicians themselves and the way that they interact and respond to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Playing smaller venues is where Luthi cut his teeth as a musician, and as such making stops in Mississippi remind him of those early days playing to no one and chatting with the bar regulars after a show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe\u2019re excited to come down to Mississippi to play for some people that aren\u2019t afraid to dance,\u201d said Luthi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Also catch LUTHI at Hal and Mal&#8217;s in Jackson, Mississippi (2\/2) as well as Blue Canoe in Tupelo, Mississippi (2\/3 &amp; 2\/4).<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"16\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14544 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg?resize=25%2C16\" alt=\"The Local Voice Ligature\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LUTHI is a rising funk act from Nashville, Tennessee.
