{"id":37612,"date":"2017-01-24T12:30:18","date_gmt":"2017-01-24T18:30:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=37612"},"modified":"2017-01-24T12:04:27","modified_gmt":"2017-01-24T18:04:27","slug":"celebrate-the-state-mississippi-bicentennial-events-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/celebrate-the-state-mississippi-bicentennial-events-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrate the State: Mississippi Bicentennial Events Announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To support local celebrations honoring Mississippi&#8217;s bicentennial, the <strong>Mississippi Humanities Council<\/strong> is partnering with the <strong>Mississippi Development Authority&#8217;s Visit Mississippi<\/strong> to oversee the <strong>Bicentennial Grants Program<\/strong>. To date, the review committee has met twice and awarded more than $96,000 for 15 different projects throughout the state. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The goal of the Bicentennial Grant Program is to inspire and empower local organizations throughout Mississippi to develop public programs documenting, interpreting and exploring community culture. The goal of the project is to explore the state&#8217;s 200 years of history through its historic structures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20pt;\"><strong>Mississippi Chambre Music Guild<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">Mississippi Bicentennial Fanfare Festival<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Three-day music event featuring a commissioned piece, &#8220;Bi-Centennial Fanfare,&#8221; being performed in the Old Capitol Rotunda. Other public activities include a high school honor choir singing Mississippi songs, a readers&#8217; theater performing a selection from the writings of Eudora Welty and a &#8220;Civil War&#8221; piece performed by a New Stage Theatre troupe. <span class=\"aBn\" data-term=\"goog_1087059028\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Feb. 9-11<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20pt;\">Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp #265, Brandon<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">Mississippi Bicentennial Civil War Show<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Two-day event featuring Mississippi artists, authors, musicians, historical reenactors, experts in historical artifacts and Civil War scholars. <span class=\"aBn\" data-term=\"goog_1087059029\"><span class=\"aQJ\">June 17-18<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20pt;\"><strong>Canton Convention and Visitors Center<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">Thea&#8217;s Turn: A Bicentennial Celebration of Cultural Learning<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Theatrical production about the life of an African American nun raised in Canton. The play traces Sister Thea&#8217;s life, which ultimately gained attention on the world stage. <span class=\"aBn\" data-term=\"goog_1087059030\"><span class=\"aQJ\">April 22<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20pt;\"><strong>City of D&#8217;Iberville<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><strong>Discover D&#8217;Iberville&#8211;A Mississippi Bicentennial Celebration<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Various projects related to local history, including a staged reenactment of D&#8217;Iberville&#8217;s landing in 1699 and a &#8220;Discover D&#8217;Iberville&#8221; booklet with highlights of the city&#8217;s history through the present day. <span class=\"aBn\" data-term=\"goog_1087059031\"><span class=\"aQJ\">February 10-11<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20pt;\"><strong>Greenville History Museum<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><strong>Plantations to the Grave<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Project to develop a website and various display exhibits on local Greenville history. The exhibits will consist of historical photographs and captions to be displayed at various sites around Greenville.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20pt;\"><strong>Delta Film Institute, Greenville<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">Holt Collier Featurette<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Production of a short film about Holt Collier, former slave and expert bear hunter, who led Theodore Roosevelt on his famous Delta bear hunt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20pt;\">Lynn Meadows Discovery Center, Gulfport<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><strong>A Celebration of Mississippi Heroes Film Festival<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Student film competition around the theme &#8220;Mississippi Heroes,&#8221; culminating in a public film festival with prizes for top films. <span class=\"aBn\" data-term=\"goog_1087059032\"><span class=\"aQJ\">April 8<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20pt;\"><strong>Hattiesburg Civic Chorus and Concert Association<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">FestivalSouth 2017<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A special series of cultural and educational programs that will be part of the annual FestivalSouth event. Funded programs will include a new display exhibit about Muppets creator Jim Henson and various puppetry arts performances. <span class=\"aBn\" data-term=\"goog_1087059033\"><span class=\"aQJ\">June 1-17<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20pt;\"><strong>New Hope Baptist Church, Jackson<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><strong>Back in the Day Black History Celebration<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A month-long series of programs honoring African American history in Mississippi, culminating in the concert event &#8220;Celebrating Our History and Culture Through Music,&#8221; which will explore the important role of gospel music in the Civil Rights Movement. <span class=\"aBn\" data-term=\"goog_1087059034\"><span class=\"aQJ\">February 23<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20pt;\">Mississippi Light Collaborative, Jackson<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">Mississippi Light Festival<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A two-day event featuring illuminated art installations, sculptures, projections, interactive technologies and light shows. Mississippi authors will speak on a range of topics and events that have shaped the state. <span class=\"aBn\" data-term=\"goog_1087059036\"><span class=\"aQJ\">February 23-25<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20pt;\">Yoknapatawpha Arts Council, Oxford<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">Mississippi Visions: Works by Contemporary Mississippi Artists<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A month-long art exhibit highlighting the diverse work of our state&#8217;s contemporary artists. Will also include a series of free hands-on workshops where the public can learn about the artistic process. June 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20pt;\">Pearl River Community College, Poplarville<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">Pearl River Community College Celebrates Mississippi&#8217;s Bicentennial<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Special Bicentennial concert at the Brownstone Center for the Arts showcasing the state&#8217;s rich musical heritage, especially the blues.
