{"id":36240,"date":"2016-10-19T10:45:33","date_gmt":"2016-10-19T15:45:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=36240"},"modified":"2016-10-18T10:36:37","modified_gmt":"2016-10-18T15:36:37","slug":"school-of-pharmacy-awarded-funds-for-diabetes-self-management-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/school-of-pharmacy-awarded-funds-for-diabetes-self-management-project\/","title":{"rendered":"School of Pharmacy Awarded Funds for Diabetes Self-Management Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">The <strong>Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute<\/strong> granted a <strong>Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award<\/strong> of $214,084 to a team of <strong>University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy<\/strong> researchers to support a project that aids patients\u2019 self-management of diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">The project, titled \u201c<strong>PaRTICIpate in Diabetes Self-Management Research Collaborative: A Conference Series<\/strong>,\u201d will build on research that shows improvement in the health of diabetes patients when they are able to self-manage their treatment. (The \u201cPaRTICI\u201d in \u201cPaRTICIpate\u201d stands for \u201cPatient Centered Research to Improve Community Involvement.\u201d) <strong>Meagen Rosenthal<\/strong>, assistant professor of pharmacy administration, will lead the project, along with <strong>Erin Holmes<\/strong>, associate professor of pharmacy administration, and <strong>Donna West-Strum<\/strong>, chair of the pharmacy administration department. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">The researchers will invite people with diabetes from three <strong>North<\/strong> <strong>Mississippi<\/strong> towns \u2013 <strong>Oxford<\/strong>, <strong>Charleston<\/strong> and <strong>Saltillo<\/strong> \u2013 to regular meetings in an effort to connect them with physicians, pharmacists, nurses and other stakeholders in a nonclinical environment to talk about where they struggle with diabetes self-management. Together, they will brainstorm patient-centered research questions aimed at improving strategies for diabetes self-management. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cTraditionally, people with diabetes have been the receivers of information about how they can better manage their condition,\u201d Rosenthal said. \u201cThis project is designed to turn people with diabetes from receivers of information to the generators of information. We will ask people specifically about areas where they struggle with diabetes self-management and use that information to develop research projects that specifically target those concerns.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">The state of Mississippi has the second-highest rate of adults with type 2 diabetes in the nation. This prevalence is a major concern for pharmacists and one of the reasons for the study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThrough these discussions, we hope to develop new research projects that matter to patients,\u201d Rosenthal said. \u201cThese projects will develop evidence that is meaningful to people with diabetes, making the research more likely to be adopted and used to improve their health.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">The project is one in a portfolio of projects approved for PCORI funding to help develop a skilled community of patients and other stakeholders from across the entire health care enterprise and to involve them meaningfully in every aspect of PCORI\u2019s work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThis project was selected for Engagement Award funding not only for its commitment to engaging patients and other stakeholders, but also for its potential to increase the usefulness and trustworthiness of the information we produce and facilitate its dissemination and uptake,\u201d said <strong>Jean Slutsky<\/strong>, PCORI\u2019s chief engagement and dissemination officer. \u201cWe look forward to following the project\u2019s progress and working with the UM School of Pharmacy to share the results.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">The UM School of Pharmacy project and the other projects approved for funding by the PCORI Engagement Award program were selected through a highly competitive review process in which applications were assessed for their ability to meet PCORI\u2019s engagement goals and program criteria.
