Oxford, Miss. \u2013 The Lafayette-Oxford-University 9\/11 Day of Service and Remembrance<\/strong><\/span> will honor and remember those who lost their lives on 9\/11 by encouraging community service through several planned service projects. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"The voluntary-observed national day of service includes volunteer opportunities at the Ole Miss-UTEP game on Saturday, September 8, the Mississippi State Veterans Home on Sunday, September 9, and the Oxford and Lafayette County Public Library on Tuesday, September 11. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are encouraging those who are interested in volunteering to sign up online through Volunteer Oxford\u2019s website, www.volunteeroxford.org<\/a>,\u201d says Kelly Shannon<\/strong>, Volunteer Oxford<\/strong><\/span> Director. \u201cIf someone does not have computer access or would rather call and sign up, that is perfectly fine, too.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Service projects are spanning over a variety of several days to emphasize the importance of the national day of service and to have a wider impact on the community. Volunteer opportunities are open to everyone of any age, and the community is encouraged to honor and commemorate those who lost their lives on 9\/11 volunteering. <\/span><\/p>\n

Sponsoring the community-wide day of service is Volunteer Oxford, the University of Mississippi Associated Student Body, the North Mississippi VISTA Project & The McLean Institute, and the Dean of Students Office\/Volunteer Services at the University of Mississippi. Other LOU community partners supporting this year\u2019s 9\/11 Day of Service include the Oxford and Lafayette County Library, the Mississippi State Veterans Home of Oxford, the Lafayette County Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), the Oxford Fire Department, the Oxford Police Department, the City of Oxford, the Oxford Park Commission, and the Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"The LOU 9\/11 Day of Service and Remembrance kicked off August 16 with a new shoes and sock donation drive benefitting Interfaith Compassion Ministry. Donations for new socks (infants, youth, adults) and new shoes or like-new shoes (infants, youth, adults) can be dropped off at the following locations: any Oxford fire station, the Oxford and Lafayette County Public Library, Volunteer Oxford, University of Mississippi Associated Student Body Office (fourth floor, Student Union) or at the University of Mississippi Americorps Office (Hume Hall, Room 231).<\/span><\/p>\n
