This year\u2019s festival touts nearly 50 performances, workshops, and art installations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">For those unfamiliar with the format, the <strong>Yoknapatawpha Arts Council<\/strong> organizes the Fringe Fest each year to showcase what Oxford and the rest of Mississippi has to offer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cEvery year [we\u2019re] offering something new. It\u2019s never the same festival twice,\u201d Said <strong>Wayne Andrews<\/strong>, Executive Director of the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council. \u201cWe\u2019re always looking for ways to engage people and showcase something new\u2026it\u2019s always fun to discover a new artist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This year the festival has added an extra day as well as condensing the amount of venues it will be spreading itself across. This year, experiences will be held at <strong>Proud Larrys<\/strong>, <strong>Shelter on Van Buren<\/strong>, <strong>The Armory Pavilion<\/strong>, as well as <strong>The Powerhouse<\/strong> itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cCurrently we have 45 experiences,\u201d said Andrews. \u201cWe think we\u2019re gonna hit 50 by the time this is all finalized\u2026we\u2019ve had some artists say they also want to do a workshop.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">New additions this year are tiered passes to the festival. You can purchase a weekend pass for $25 or an all-inclusive pass for $45 that includes access to the three headliners on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Thursday\u2019s headline event will be the <strong>Iron Bartender<\/strong> held at The Powerhouse. Each contestant will receive a sealed box containing a variety of liquor and have 30 minutes to create a cocktail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cEveryone will have access to the same mixers,\u201d said Andrews. \u201cThen [the audience] gets to walk around and taste all the cocktails.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Friday will feature the annual Secret Show, put on by a committee of local artists. The details and location will be withheld until just hours prior to the event starting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt\u2019s going to be very interactive,\u201d said Andrews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Saturday will bring the <strong>VaudeVillains Burlesque Company<\/strong> to The Powerhouse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThey\u2019re based out of Florida and the only act not directly connected to Mississippi,\u201d said Andrews. \u201cLast year\u2019s Company recommended Oxford so much that [VaudeVillains] wanted to come up this year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Fringe Fest will be hosting many events aimed towards writers and publishers. The creators of <strong>Dime Magazine<\/strong> will talk about their approach to culture in <strong>Mississippi<\/strong> and what their end game is with the magazine and redefining the state. Oxford Writes will host a roundtable event at Shelter on Van Buren.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Shelter will also be hosting a blind book exchange. Each book will be wrapped in paper with its genre and a topic marked. Attendees will be able to take a book for themselves without charge and, if so inclined, leave a book that they have previously wrapped and marked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Among the nearly 50 experiences are experimental performance artist <strong>Three Brained Robot<\/strong>, a contortionist that goes by the name Selia Somethingwith social ties to Mississippi, and the chance to be an extra in a scene for an upcoming Oxford community film.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cSaturday morning on the courthouse lawn, we\u2019re having a crowd scene,\u201d said Andrews. \u201cJust show up, and you can be in a movie.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u00a0As an \u201cartist owned\u201d festival, all proceeds from ticket sales will be split equally among the festival\u2019s entertainers, including The Powerhouse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a very Unique festival, it\u2019s a very different festival,\u201d said Andrews. \u201cWe want to give a voice to artists that are emerging.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"16\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14544 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg?resize=25%2C16\" alt=\"The Local Voice Ligature\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every year, August brings us two things you simply can\u2019t miss: Oppressive heat and Oxford\u2019s Fringe Fest.
