While several of the houses on Washington Avenue Extended were occupied for years by local musicians and soundmen, one house in particular was the location of Oxford&#8217;s infamous recording studio, <strong>The Lip <\/strong>(309 Washington Ave Ext.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Owned and operated by Oxford native <strong>Tom Queyja<\/strong>, The Lip Studio produced a whole generation of vital recordings that will outlast us all, including albums and recordings by <strong>The Cooters<\/strong>, <strong>Zoogma<\/strong>, <strong>Hemptones<\/strong>, <strong>Swole<\/strong>, <strong>Maria Y El Sol<\/strong>, <strong>Pithecanfunkus Erectus<\/strong>, <strong>Stoneface<\/strong>, <strong>Fappy Tweed<\/strong>, <strong>Josh Kelley<\/strong>, <strong>Morphist<\/strong>, <strong>Pine Ross<\/strong>, <strong>This Club, RiverLeft, Simon Scott, John Weston, The Supernatural, David Riley<\/strong>, <strong>King Crooked Letta<\/strong>, <strong>Ingram Hill<\/strong>, <strong>Lighting Boy Gomez<\/strong>, and the list goes on and on and on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Lip featured a fantastic TAC Scorpion recording console that was purchased from producer <strong>Dennis Herring<\/strong> owner of Oxford&#8217;s <strong>Sweet Tea Studio<\/strong>, which is now based in Los Angeles. Herring is best known for his production work with <strong>Counting Crows, Cracker, Elvis Costello,<\/strong> <strong>Modest Mouse<\/strong>, and Grammy award winning albums by <strong>Buddy Guy<\/strong> and <strong>Jars of Clay<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Queyja also moved The Lip studio to Los Angeles in 2012, where a new generation of LA bands now record, after the owners of the house decided to sell the property. It has never sold, sitting vacant for the last four years. Now it is going to be auctioned off June 23.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Another soon to be auctioned house next door to the old Lip Studio was known as <strong>Wobitty Headquarters <\/strong>(307 Washington Avenue Ext.), and it featured a small recording room operated by producer <strong>Ted Gainey<\/strong> (<strong>Kudzu Kings, Blue Mountain, Taylor Grocery Band, SuperSlab<\/strong>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;I had a room in the old Wobitty HQ while The Lip was open,&#8221; Gainey said. &#8220;I worked with <strong>Guelel Kumba<\/strong> there some. <strong>Clay Jones<\/strong> and I got some great stuff with <strong>Mark Adamec<\/strong> and <strong>Tim Seely<\/strong>, <strong>Justin Showah<\/strong>, and <strong>Max Williams<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Other well known musicians who recorded at there include <strong>Cary Hudson, Tate Moore, Kincain, Enigma Jazz Project, <\/strong>and of course, the experimental heavy rock band <strong>Wobitty, <\/strong>which featured<strong> Ted Gainey, Tom Queyja, <\/strong>and bassist<strong> Brian Walker.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Other houses at 311 and 313 Washington Avenue Ext. soon to be auctioned were occupied for years by Oxford&#8217;s vital live sound engineers, including <strong>Leigh Taylor<\/strong> of <strong>Proud Larrys&#8217;<\/strong> and <strong>Al Cotten<\/strong>, who worked for years at <strong>The Library, <\/strong>Proud Larrys&#8217;, and <strong>Rebel Sound and Lighting<\/strong>. The house at 313 was the homestead of drummer, <strong>Mike Namorato<\/strong> and was used as a rehearsal space for <strong>The Cooters<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">There is a house on Lewis Lane that is also up for auction, and it was the site of the rehearsal studio that Oxford&#8217;s first Thrash Metal band <strong>Dead Fish<\/strong> used from 1988-1989.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If Oxford ever gets an &#8220;Oxford Music Trail&#8221; with historical markers, Soundman Row will be on it.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"16\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14544 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg?resize=25%2C16\" alt=\"The Local Voice Ligature\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Edited to add:\u00a0The auction is Thursday, June 23 at the Marriott Courtyard in Oxford, Mississippi.
