Artistic Style:<\/strong> Photography\/Alternative photographic processes, specifically cyanotypes, which are also known as \u201cblueprints.\u201d I stain them so the final print has an earthy, blue-brown duotone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hometown:<\/strong> Poplarville, MS<\/span><\/p>\n

How long have you lived in Oxford?<\/strong> My time in Oxford is now at 6 years, but this is my first full year returning to Oxford since I got my BFA at Ole Miss.<\/span><\/p>\n

Early art experience:<\/strong> A pack of glitter crayons from the \u201ctooth fairy\u201d found under my pillow. These crayons compacted with chunks of glitter offered me the possibility to \u201cmake stars.\u201d I eyed them in a rummage store and never expected to see them again\u2014my mom was sneaky\u2014but it really is the small things that make an impact.\u00a0 At 16, my dad gave me my first camera when I left home to attend the Mississippi School for Math and Science for my last 2 years of high school, so that\u2019s where photography started for me.<\/span><\/p>\n

Favorite visual artists:<\/strong> Flor Gardu\u00f1o, Ana Mendieta, Khan and Selesnick<\/span><\/p>\n

Art school?<\/strong> Ole Miss for a BFA in Imaging Arts and an MFA in Photography from Louisiana Tech University.<\/span><\/p>\n

Favorite book or author:<\/strong> Currently: The Road<\/em> by Cormac McCarthy <\/span>
\n Favorite quotation:<\/strong> \u201cInspiration exists, but it has to find you working.\u201d\u00a0 – Pablo Picasso<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Johnson26\"<\/a>How many hours to you spend in your studio each day? <\/strong>It\u2019s hard to pinpoint specific numbers \u2013 In my everyday practice, there\u2019s a lot of time I\u2019m simply observing, finding, or collecting things I encounter to work with in a photograph so I might not necessarily be sitting in a studio. When I\u2019m printing, it can be a full day \u2013 7pm-7am due to the hands-on nature of alternative processes. But this is changing now that I teach, though 5pm-midnight can be normal hours several days a week. I\u2019m not printing everyday, however, so the actual process of making a photograph might only be a few hours but the processing afterwards can be lengthy to create a one-of-a-kind print.<\/span><\/p>\n

Favorite project you\u2019ve completed: <\/strong>\u201cUntamed\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Three ideas you want to explore in art: <\/strong>Our relationship to the land, the connection between humans and the animal word, and exploring our fragile human condition are themes that are always of interest to me.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you have a \u201cday job\u201d?<\/strong> I have a rewarding job as an Adjunct instructor in Art at the University of Mississippi<\/span><\/p>\n

Favorite music\/bands: <\/strong>Wild animals outside my bedroom window.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are some of your other hobbies? <\/strong>Jogging, reading, writing, listening, and observing the world around me.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where do you hang out in Oxford? <\/strong>\u00a0The Ole Miss Art department, or browsing Square Books and meandering through the poetry book section.<\/span><\/p>\n
