{"id":33894,"date":"2016-05-29T10:00:54","date_gmt":"2016-05-29T15:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=33894"},"modified":"2016-05-26T12:14:51","modified_gmt":"2016-05-26T17:14:51","slug":"a-decade-later-big-ass-truck-return-to-proud-larrys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/a-decade-later-big-ass-truck-return-to-proud-larrys\/","title":{"rendered":"A Decade Later Big Ass Truck Return to Proud Larrys&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">For only the second time since 2001,<strong> Memphis<\/strong>-based <strong>Big<\/strong> <strong>Ass<\/strong> <strong>Truck<\/strong> will reunite, this time for two live shows, the first coming to <strong>Proud<\/strong> <strong>Larrys\u2019<\/strong> in <strong>Oxford<\/strong> on Friday, June 3; and the second the following night at <strong>Levitt<\/strong> <strong>Shell<\/strong> in Memphis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">For those of you who are under 30, Big Ass Truck is a Memphis band whose music incorporates rock, hip-hop, and \u201cpsychedelic-funk.\u201d They were frequently known to sell out shows at Proud Larrys\u2019 during the mid-90s. \u201cLarry\u2019s was our home,\u201d vocalist and guitarist <strong>Steve Selvidge<\/strong> told <em>TLV<\/em>. \u201cI mean, we were one of the first bands to play Proud Larrys\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Over the years, Big Ass Truck has had a dozen or so members. The band\u2019s original lineup comprised <strong>Selvidge<\/strong>, guitarist\/vocalist <strong>Robby Grant<\/strong>, drummer <strong>Robert<\/strong> <strong>Barnett,<\/strong> bassist <strong>Joe<\/strong> <strong>Boone<\/strong>, keyboardist <strong>Alex<\/strong> <strong>Greene,<\/strong> and DJ <strong>Colin<\/strong> <strong>Butler<\/strong> providing samples, beats, and loops during live performances and recording sessions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Boone, who now works as the music editor at <em>The Memphis Flyer<\/em>, credits Greene and Butler in a 2014 article as being the dimension that defined the band\u2019s sound, and being essential to their success. \u201cAny critical references to soul or hip-hop stem from the turntables and the keyboards,\u201d Boone wrote. \u201cThey gave us the bigger sound and wider palette we heard from Al Green at Royal Studios and the Beastie Boys\u2019 Grand Royal records.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThe first reunion,\u201d Selvidge said, referring to a one-night only performance at Minglewood Hall in Memphis in February of 2014, \u201cwe did with the original lineup, or the first record lineup, basically.\u201d He went on to explain that the guys from the first record were used because the band didn\u2019t have a lot of time to prepare for the show, and that \u201cit just made sense because it put the thing in motion and gave us some parameters to work with.\u201d However, their decision to go with the earlier roster, they were limited in the song selection for the show. \u201cWe mainly played stuff from the first two records,\u201d Selvidge explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Selvidge went on to say that their upcoming shows will feature a different lineup than 2014. They decided to do the lineup as it was when they stopped playing in 2001, which is similar to the earlier one, but with <strong>Grayson Grant <\/strong>replacing Boone on bass, and longtime friend and sometimes-producer <strong>Ross Rice <\/strong>taking over for Greene\u00a0 on keys. \u201cThis allows us to play anything from our catalog,\u201d he proudly proclaims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Not to say that the 2014 show wasn\u2019t a huge success for the band. Selvidge explained that the group was initially booked to play The 1884 Lounge, which is a small room attached to Minglewood Hall utilized by smaller acts that can\u2019t fill the 1500 seat venue. \u201cWe didn\u2019t know who was going to show up, or anything,\u201d he recalled. \u00a0\u201cWe just sort of put something on our respective social media about the gig and then it sold out immediately,\u201d he says. Due to the large demand for tickets, the band decided to move into the big room, but not open it up all the way. Instead, the plan was to use a pipe and drape system to make the large venue feel more intimate to a smaller crowd. \u201cThen, more and more people started buying tickets, Selvidge said laughingly. \u201cBy the time it was all said and done there were 1500 people there. We were pleasantly surprised.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>You can check out Big Ass Truck at Proud Larrys\u2019 on Friday, June 3.
