The event features six musical performances including <strong>And The Echo<\/strong>, <strong>Future Elevators<\/strong>, and more. In addition there will be DJ sets from <strong>DJ Gogo<\/strong> and <strong>Special K<\/strong>, as well as a silent art auction and film block of LGBTQ short films presented by <strong>Crossroads Film Society<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/phil-love-2.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"206\" height=\"349\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33873 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/phil-love-2.jpg?resize=206%2C349\" alt=\"phil love 2\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/phil-love-2.jpg?w=206&amp;ssl=1 206w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/phil-love-2.jpg?resize=177%2C300&amp;ssl=1 177w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/a>The event came about when <strong>Morgan Pennington<\/strong> and <strong>Winn McElroy<\/strong> were invited to play a fund raiser in <strong>Jackson, Mississippi<\/strong> of the same name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cMorgan and I were contacted by Cody Cox about playing,\u201d said McElroy. \u201cUnfortunately we couldn\u2019t because we already had the show booked in Oxford with Future Elevators. We decided to try and host the same event here in Oxford and the Lyric was kind enough to donate the space to us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The event will donate 100% of proceeds to \u201cUnity Mississippi which provides funding for Mississippi Pride and education for building relationships between the heterosexual and LGBTQ community,\u201d said McElroy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Birmingham band Future Elevators was originally booked with And The Echo to play the Cat\u2019s Purring Dude Ranch. Founder, <strong>Michael Shackelford<\/strong>, was happy to transition to the new venue for his first time bring his band to the Oxford.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Future Elevators is the product of Shackelford\u2019s desire to take charge of writing and playing his own music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Shackelford had already written Future Elevator\u2019s first single while still playing with his previous band and Birmingham staple <strong>The Grenadines<\/strong>. After the band\u2019s break up, he was unsure how receptive a label would be to pick up his project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThat song just sat for a minute, it\u2019s kind of a miracle that anything even happened with it,\u201d said Shackelford. \u201cWhen a band breaks up you don\u2019t know if they\u2019re going to invest in you again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33876\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33876\" style=\"width: 206px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/future-elevators-web-image.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33876 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/future-elevators-web-image.jpg?resize=206%2C309\" alt=\"future elevators web image\" width=\"206\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/future-elevators-web-image.jpg?w=206&amp;ssl=1 206w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/future-elevators-web-image.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33876\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michael Shackelford<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Communicating Vessels<\/strong> did invest in him, allowing him studio time and to work with the legendary producer, engineer, and mixer <strong>Darrell Thorp<\/strong>. Thorp is known for having worked on albums for <strong>Beck<\/strong>, <strong>Radiohead<\/strong>, and <strong>Gnarls Barkley<\/strong> among many others. After having finished tracking the album, Shackelford was tasked with deciding whether to mix the album in house or reach out for a fresh set of ears.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt came down to are we going to mix this on our own as crazy-deep into this as we already are or do we try to get some fresh ears on it,\u201d said Shackelford. \u201cMy first suggestion was Darrell\u2026fortunately with a couple phone calls we made that happen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">With much of the writing process taking place after The Grenadines had disbanded, Shackelford openly channeled his uncertainty into the album. In a previous interview he said that he wanted to blend sad and hopeful for this project. He expanded on what he meant by that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt was sort of what I was living at the moment,\u201d said Shackelford. \u201cI was going through a really dark time\u2026but I was visualizing some sort of hopeful thing. I didn\u2019t want to write an album that was just sad and miserable, so I channeled that into something people might could relate to instead of just drowning in selfish sorrows.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A strong example of how blending those emotions worked out is a song late into the album titled \u201c<strong>Narcosis<\/strong>.\u201d It\u2019s difficult not to recall that his previous band broke up as Shackelford describes \u201cNarcosis\u201d as a plane crash survivor searching through the wreckage for other survivors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe had done most of the recording and I didn\u2019t like the drums at all. They were too boring and straightforward,\u201d said Shackelford. \u201cI wanted to f**k them up, but I wanted it to be tasteful. That along with the feeling of the song which is about being toxic, shutting out the rest of the world, and being wrapped up in your own sadness felt like surviving a plane crash and floating around looking for others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Shackelford did find others and turned it into a now nationally touring act that he leads onstage and in songwriting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI\u2019m switching roles a little bit,\u201d said Shackelford. \u201cI\u2019m okay with being in the back and making things happen, but this is cool because it\u2019s a chance to actually take credit for the work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Future Elevators will be playing with And The Echo at The Lyric in Oxford on May 26.
