Cory Taylor Cox<\/strong> will release his new album\u00a0Extended Play<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0at Proud Larrys’<\/strong> on May 13<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason for me wanting to do it in Oxford on that day is that it\u2019s exactly the five year anniversary of the last album,\u201d said Cox. \u201cBoth of them happen to be a Friday the thirteenth, so I thought that would be fun.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Now settled in Nashville<\/strong>, Cox has spent much of his life moving throughout the southeast. He regards Oxford and Memphis as being formative in finding his sound and confidence.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I lived in Oxford I moved towards more of a rock sound,\u201d said Cox. \u201cMemphis was really influential on me when I first started playing my own music. I lived in North Mississippi but I\u2019d drive up there to play a lot of shows. The kids there and the bands there were super supportive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

With three albums out now, each represent a different approach to recording a release.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy very first record that came out in 2008 was just a singer-songwriter,\u201d said Cox. \u201cThen when I lived in Oxford we recorded [We Made These Sounds Together<\/em>] more as a full band since we were playing bars a lot. Now with [Extended Play<\/em>], I\u2019m writing and recording with the same band that I tour with.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Extended Play<\/em> was initially planned to be a longer album that compiled old songs of Cox\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>\u201cIt was going to be a hodgepodge record of songs I\u2019d written and recorded here and there over the last five years,\u201d said Cox. \u201cI probably had fifteen songs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Once in Nashville, Cox recorded four songs with his current band that would become Extended Play.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I got to Nashville and got the band I\u2019m playing with now we recorded four new songs just to be added to this project,\u201d said Cox. \u201cIt didn\u2019t sound cohesive though, so we decided it would be better to put an EP instead of a full length so that the songs would better represent what we\u2019re doing now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The shorter format release is something that has always appealed to Cox.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI like to do short EPs like that so I can press them to 7\u201d vinyl,\u201d said Cox \u201cIt\u2019s cool to have that collector\u2019s piece.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Three of the original fifteen songs are being released exclusively when you purchase the album through bandcamp<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Opening for Cox will be Rock Eupora<\/strong> and Young Valley<\/strong> both from Mississippi<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re actually doing three shows together in Starkville and Nashville,\u201d said Cox. \u201cI\u2019m real excited to spend some time with those guys and see them play every night.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
