May is Mental Health Awareness month and too many middle managers don\u2019t know how to foster good mental health practices in their roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In a 2015 study in the Journal of Sociology of Health and Illness, \u201c\u2026researchers found that these middle managers were significantly more likely to suffer symptoms of depression and anxiety than their counterparts at the top or bottom of the workplace hierarchy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">So if this is true what can a hard-working middle manager do to avoid becoming a statistic and practice good mental health?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">First, understand that mental health is more than just mental illness. It is a diverse field of study that includes things like stress management.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Second, to be a mentally healthy middle manager, you must apply the 4 Cs:<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>C- Check your beliefs<\/strong>. Circumstances do not determine where you\u2019ll go but where you start. Examine your thoughts to see what beliefs are keeping you stuck when you need to be soaring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>C- Celebrate.<\/strong> Celebrate success wherever they happen. Too many managers either focus on what\u2019s not working or avoid celebrations for fear it will give someone a \u201cbig head\u201d. If you don\u2019t count your blessings, you\u2019ll begin to assume you don\u2019t have any\u2026and that leads to a breakdown in mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>C-Connect to a community that gets you.<\/strong> As much as your loved one cares about you, you need to be around people who get who you are and what you are going through as a middle manager.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>C-Challenge yourself.<\/strong> Nothing great ever happened inside your comfort zone. Challenge yourself to learn new skills, take bigger risks, and push past your comfort zone to exercise underdeveloped muscles. Good stress is good for mental health.
