Thavolia Glymph (Duke University)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

On April 14<\/span>, Thavolia Glymph<\/strong> (Duke University) will speak on \u201cBlack Women and Children Refugees: The Making of a Civil War Humanitarian Crisis.\u201d The lecture will take place at 6 pm<\/span>\u00a0<\/em>in\u00a0<\/em>the Farley Hall Auditorium\u00a0<\/em>(Room 202) on the University of Mississippi campus. The event is free and open to the public.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Glymph is an Associate Professor of History at Duke University. Her first book,\u00a0Out of the House of Bondage: The Transformation of the Plantation Household<\/em>, examined the ways black and white women deployed competing gender ideals in their conflicts within domestic spaces. Dr. Glymph is currently working on a study of the lives of black women and children in refugee and labor camps during the Civil War.<\/span><\/p>\n

Each April, the Center for Civil War Research<\/strong> invites a distinguished historian to the University of Mississippi<\/strong> to deliver a lecture on the Civil War era. This lecture series was made possible by Dr. Van Robinson Burnham<\/strong>, a Mississippi native and University of Mississippi alumnus whose lifelong love of history and archaeology prompted his generous support for the Center for Civil War Research.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Center for Civil War Research is also inviting you to save the date for the\u00a0annual Conference on the Civil War<\/strong>: October 6<\/span>–8, 2016<\/span>.\u00a0 The conference, entitled, \u201cA Just and Lasting Peace: Reconstruction and the Making of Postwar America,\u201d\u00a0will be hosted in partnership with the Arch Dalrymple III Department of History\u2019s annual Porter Fortune Symposium<\/strong>. \u00a0\"The<\/span><\/p>\n
