When Group Text left the stage, manager <strong>Bruce Butler<\/strong> announced that Boyfriend would not be playing. Butler read a prepared statement citing political tension and the safety of Proud Larrys\u2019 as a venue for why she would not be performing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Screen-Shot-2016-04-11-at-6.55.15-PM.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-32990\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-32990 \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Screen-Shot-2016-04-11-at-6.55.15-PM.png?resize=503%2C391\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-04-11 at 6.55.15 PM\" width=\"503\" height=\"391\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Local Voice reached out to Boyfriend, who was quick to respond and explain the circumstances surrounding that evening, while trying on lingerie at her favorite shop in New Orleans, The Trashy Diva.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt was about an hour before we were going to be on stage when the owners came downstairs and said they wanted to talk to us,\u201d said Boyfriend. \u201c[They voiced] concerns about their ability to continue as a business if they allowed the show to go on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The owners told boyfriend she would need to edit the content of her show to go on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt puts them in a really tough spot,\u201d said boyfriend. \u201cThat\u2019s not who they want to be as humans or business owners. When it came down to it, 2 inches of flesh is not really enough of an edit to make the overall rap cabaret performance safe for them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Boyfriend wanted to make clear that she was empathetic to the position that Proud Larrys\u2019 was in and held no grudge against them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cUltimately it was the venue\u2019s decision to cancel, and I understand that,\u201d said Boyfriend. \u201cI don\u2019t want to put someone at risk of losing their livelihood. If I was the one that was going to put in handcuffs then I would have said forget it, we\u2019re going on stage right now and I\u2019m performing. Because of how the law is structured, it would the show promoter who would be held accountable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Concern that her canceling the show was done as a protest to Mississippi\u2019s religious freedom law was struck down instantly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cAll the more reason to push the boundaries,\u201d said Boyfriend. \u201cHB1523 was just passed, all the more reason to get up there and do this. But at the end of the day it\u2019s someone\u2019s business and someone\u2019s livelihood\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">She continued with what particularly interested her about the entire situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cYou have a business that feels afraid to conduct it\u2019s own business,\u201d said Boyfriend. \u201cRight after the passing of this law that theoretically protects businesses and individuals and their ability to conduct themselves, it\u2019s kind of ironic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Boyfriend said that she will be back in Oxford as soon as possible.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14544\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"16\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14544 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg?resize=25%2C16\" alt=\"The Local Voice Ligature\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Editor&#8217;s Note, for clarification (8:55 pm 04\/11\/2016):\u00a0Boyfriend&#8217;s\u00a0performance is known for being highly sexual and physically revealing.
