New Orleans<\/strong> cabaret-rapper Boyfriend<\/strong> was kind enough to take a break from working on new music in Utah to talk with The Local Voice<\/em> about becoming Boyfriend and her upcoming show at Proud Larrys\u2019<\/strong> on April 9.<\/span><\/p>\n

Boyfriend\u2019s conception, marked by a music video released on her YouTube<\/strong> account, was a quick decision for the performer.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere was probably only a month before I unleased it on the public eye\u2026there wasn\u2019t too much of a percolation period,\u201d said Boyfriend. \u201cI consider the birth of it to be when I released my first music video in February of 2012.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In the early stages of Boyfriend, the elements of cabaret had yet to be fully realized.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"boyfriend2\"<\/a>\u201cAt first I felt I had to do what everyone else what doing, which was wear an interesting vintage shirt and do an interesting hairstyle and go somewhere interesting,\u201d said Boyfriend. \u201cI decided, \u2018You know what? Being at home in my living room is just as interesting,\u2019 and I\u2019m way comfortable in slippers than I am in stilettos. Thus Rap Cabaret was born\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The teacher turned rapper has come a long way in the time since launching the Boyfriend project via YouTube video. Now a full time artist, she\u2019s able to express herself without concern of repercussions from her day job.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was ready to leave the kiddos behind because I was too afraid they would discover that I walk around in my underwear sometimes,\u201d said Boyfriend. \u201cIt just became uncomfortable so I decided to be able to fully embrace who I am without being afraid anymore.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus far she has avoided any awkward encounters.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo one as intimate as a student or parent of a student [has learned the identity],\u201d said Boyfriend. \u201cI\u2019m sure it\u2019ll happen eventually, but in the meantime\u2026New Orleans is a good host for the cult of personality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In both her music and live performance, she says that comfort is the most important aspect of the project. She goes on to explain the inclusion of hair rollers and creating her look on stage.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Boyfriend-Larrys-Flyer\"<\/a>\u201cComfort and Process,\u201d said Boyfriend. \u201cAnything that has happened on stage has been because I ran out of time to do it before I went on stage and thought, \u2018Why not just do it on stage?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Continuing the trend of theatrical elements, Boyfriend\u2019s performances will frequently include costume changes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI suppose on the one hand it is just aesthetic and wanting to show off,\u201d says Boyfriend. \u201cBut, on the other hand, as the show progresses it calls for different looks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

More than just a showcase of music and outfits, Boyfriend shows are a collection of all her artistic efforts and ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that you\u2019re seeing it, hearing it, smelling it, and if you\u2019re on the front row feeling it,\u201d said Boyfriend. \u201cI find it to be the most coherent place for all my work to exist at once, if only for a day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Her most recent release, Love Your Boyfriend, Pt. 3<\/em><\/strong>, is currently less than a month old. Rather than being nervous about performing the new material, she\u2019s anxious to show everyone the work.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s less than a week old,\u201d said Boyfriend. \u201cIt can\u2019t even see colors yet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Whereas her previous releases have been produced by SEXPARTY<\/strong>, a New Orleans based team, her newest release features a large selection of producers remixing records from her Love Your Boyfriend EP<\/em> <\/strong>and Love Your Boyfriend, Pt. 2<\/em><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLove Your Boyfriend Pt. 3\u2026actually features 10 producers,\u201d said Boyfriend. \u201cMoving forward I\u2019m working with some names I can\u2019t disclose just yet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Diversifying who she works with is an important element to Boyfriend.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the fun part of collaboration,\u201d said Boyfriend. \u201cIf you have a dinner party with the same people every night, the conversation is going to grow dull.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

After Boyfriend wraps up this string of tours, she plans to finish working on her new material<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI try to keep my perspective shortened, because things can change.\u201d said Boyfriend. \u201cFor the time being I\u2019m looking forward to playing in the South again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Tickets will be available at the door and online for $7. Boyfriend also added that anyone who shows up in lingerie will receive a, \u201cspecial gift.\u201d\u00a0\"The<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
