{"id":32620,"date":"2016-04-01T08:00:16","date_gmt":"2016-04-01T13:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=32620"},"modified":"2016-03-31T17:06:36","modified_gmt":"2016-03-31T22:06:36","slug":"mississippi-the-dance-company-presents-fresh-start","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/mississippi-the-dance-company-presents-fresh-start\/","title":{"rendered":"Mississippi: The Dance Company presents &#8220;Fresh Start&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ole Miss\u00a0Theatre Arts\u2019 resident dance company,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Mississippi: The Dance Company, is in rehearsal for their annual concert.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The theme of the concert is \u201cFresh Start\u201d and will\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">feature choreography by Artistic Director and Professor of Movement and Dance Jennifer Mizenko, Interim Chair and Associate Professor of Theatre Rene Pulliam, faculty members Roxie Thomas and Seth Lieber with special guest artist Corrie Cockrell.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/fresh-start-poster.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-32621\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-32621\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/fresh-start-poster.jpg?resize=194%2C300\" alt=\"fresh start poster\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/fresh-start-poster.jpg?resize=194%2C300&amp;ssl=1 194w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/fresh-start-poster.jpg?w=621&amp;ssl=1 621w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThe choreography is super engaging and the dancers are super inspiring.\u00a0 Overall though a lot of the pieces this year are artistically engaging,\u201d said Cory Clarke a junior BFA Musical Theatre major.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The concert will also feature three student directed works that will be performed at the South Conference of the American College Dance Association.\u00a0 The pieces have been a collaborative effort between both faculty and students with choreography, music and poetry composed or accompanied by both students and faculty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cI wrote an original song for Jen\u2019s piece\u2026It\u2019s been really fun to see something I personally worked on individually come to life collaboratively,\u201d said Clarke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The pieces definitely reflect the theme of the show through the imagery according to Clarke.\u00a0 Figures falling, rising and being born again convey the message of a \u201cfresh start.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In addition the concert will showcase a special dance piece choreographed by Mizenko addressing water issues of the lower Mississippi River for National Water Dance Day on April 16.\u00a0 The piece will be adapted for a performance on a specially constructed raft built by the noted Mississippi River guide John Ruskey of Quapaw Canoe Company.\u00a0 The performance will include poetry by Ole Miss English department faculty member, Ann Fisher-Wirth and documented by the Director of Ole Miss Cinema, Alan Arrivee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cThis Mississippi River Water Dance project will be a minor explosion of art &amp;
