{"id":32295,"date":"2016-03-20T11:51:36","date_gmt":"2016-03-20T17:51:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=32295"},"modified":"2016-03-17T16:30:38","modified_gmt":"2016-03-17T22:30:38","slug":"oxford-writes-a-new-group-for-writers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/oxford-writes-a-new-group-for-writers\/","title":{"rendered":"Oxford Writes: A New Group for Writers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Oxford Writes<\/strong> is a single-day writing event and the brainchild of Mississippi native and Oxford writer, <strong>Jeff Roberson<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">While driving around the Square, Roberson was inspired by Oxford\u2019s close relationship to writing and the long history of authors who have called it home. He began to envision an event that would bring together writers from all over to hone the craft that has long defined this town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe wanted to do this because Oxford is a place something like this can happen,\u201d said Roberson. \u201cThe [registration] numbers are looking good. We\u2019d like people to register by March 31.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The event is set to take place on <strong>Saturday April 2<\/strong>, at <strong>The Orchard<\/strong> on Hwy 7, starting at 8:30 am with closing remarks at 4 pm followed by socializing at the <strong>City Grocery<\/strong> bar afterwards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cIt\u2019s going to be free the first time,\u201d said Roberson. \u201cWe want to use this as a chance to monitor interest and see what people like.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Oxford Writes will feature a variety of workshops, including a fiction workshop with local author <strong>Julie Cantrell<\/strong>, who released her third novel, <em>The Fathered Bone<\/em>, this January.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32299\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32299\" style=\"width: 868px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/FaulknerChair.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-32299\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32299 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/FaulknerChair.jpg?resize=640%2C755\" alt=\"FaulknerChair\" width=\"640\" height=\"755\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/FaulknerChair.jpg?resize=868%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 868w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/FaulknerChair.jpg?resize=254%2C300&amp;ssl=1 254w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/FaulknerChair.jpg?resize=768%2C906&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/FaulknerChair.jpg?w=1085&amp;ssl=1 1085w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32299\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">William Faulkner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cOxford Writes is a concept that is long overdue for a community so rich in the literary arts,\u201d said Cantrell. In her portion of the workshop, she plans to share some insights she picked up though publishing three novels in four years and \u201cwork through some hands-on projects that will hopefully ignite creative flow for attendees.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Renowned Oxford writer and publisher <strong>Neil White<\/strong> will present the nonfiction segment of the workshop, focusing on techniques for writing creative nonfiction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cVery simply that is telling a story [using] the techniques of fiction so that the story comes alive on the page for a reader [as though] they were reading a novel. It just happens to be a true story,\u201d said White.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">White also plans to focus on the process of revision. Very few writers are able to put down perfect sentences on the first try\u2014the process can take days or even years for a work to achieve its finished form. White aims to illustrate this critical undertaking by showing \u201creal life examples of poor first drafts, a series of revisions, and how they finally came out in printed form that was a perfect as the writer could make them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Another segment of the day will give attendees a choice of two workshops. The first option focuses on modern short form such as online writing, blogging, and social media with <strong>Adam Ganucheu<\/strong>, <strong>Wesley Bell<\/strong>, <strong>Slade Rand<\/strong>, and <strong>Dave Waddell<\/strong>. The other workshop leans towards more traditional approaches including feature writing, magazine writing, and sports writing with <strong>Ty Allushuski<\/strong>, <strong>Cindy Howle<\/strong>, <strong>John Wilbert<\/strong>, and the founder himself, Jeff Roberson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Lunch will be provided, during which Pontotoc native and former Ole Miss quarterback <strong>Jim Weatherly <\/strong>will lead a Q&amp;A session focusing on his craft of songwriting. Weatherly, who wrote \u201cMidnight Train to Georgia,\u201d among other hits, was inducted to the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWe want to branch out eventually\u2014test the waters, see what people like,\u201d said Roberson. \u201cWe\u2019d like to have a monthly get-together. There seems to be a lot of interest so far.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The event is aimed at writers of all skill levels ages 18 and older. Anyone with an interest in writing should take advantage of this \u201cinteractive day of writing, listening, learning, and networking among other writers, bloggers, editors, authors, and publishers of all skill levels.\u201d With the rich literary culture thriving in Oxford, this will be an excellent opportunity for wordsmiths to make important connections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cOne of the most important things for beginning writers is honest critical constructive critiques,\u201d said White. \u201cIf you show it to your mother or your best friend they\u2019re [going to tell you] it\u2019s so great and [they] can\u2019t wait to read it in a book. If you send it to an editor at a book publishing company they\u2019re gonna rip you a new one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To register for the April 2 event, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordwrites.com\">www.oxfordwrites.com<\/a>, and fill out the online registration form.
