Guitarist and singer Luther Dickinson<\/strong> has been a staple of the North Mississippi music scene for decades now, rising to prominence as a member of the Grammy-nominated North Mississippi Allstars<\/strong>, and later as lead guitarist for The Black Crowes<\/strong>. However, his latest record,\u00a0Blues & Ballads<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em>marks a step back from the electrified blues-boogie sound that made him famous in favor of a more stripped-down, personal approach to songwriting.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Dickinson,\u00a0Blues & Ballads<\/em>\u00a0\u201ccelebrates the American oral tradition of blues and folk songs, not only being passed down and evolving but being transcribed\u2026 [a]nd entered into the discipline of written sheet music and songbooks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The CD is packaged with Luther\u2019s own handwritten lyrics, but the vinyl LP fully embraces his stance against the immediacy and vapidity of modern music consumption. It includes a songbook of transcribed songs \u2014 \u201cthe original recording technique,\u201d according to Dickinson \u2014 and was produced in a limited run with the intention of retaining an exclusive, underground aura.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis art is not for the masses,\u201d he says. \u201cIt is meant to wither and fade and then rise from the ashes again and again, evolving and mutating.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
