Publisher and author\u00a0Neil White<\/strong>, author\u00a0Julie Cantrell<\/strong>, and songwriter\u00a0<\/strong>Jim Weatherly<\/strong>\u00a0are headliners for the first\u00a0Oxford Writes<\/strong>\u00a0workshop on Saturday, April 2.<\/span><\/p>\n

The workshop, to be held at the\u00a0Orchard<\/strong>\u00a0in Oxford at 295 Highway 7 North, is free for participants and is a part of the mission of Oxford Writes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOxford Writes is a mentoring and development venture for aspiring or published writers to interact with others to improve their own skills by learning and sharing their works and ideas,\u201d said\u00a0Jeff Roberson<\/strong>, founder and director of Oxford Writes. \u201cThe most important aspect is that we want people of all levels of writing to be a part of this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The workshop is intended for anyone interested in writing, no matter the stage participants currently view their level of proficiency. It is for ages 18 and older.\u00a0Activities begin with a mix and mingle session at\u00a08:30 am, followed by opening remarks at\u00a09 am. The sessions move on throughout the day with lunch provided.<\/span><\/p>\n

There will be a session for participants on blogging, online writing, and social media, and another session on feature writing, magazine writing, and sports writing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cantrell will focus on fiction, White will speak about non-fiction, and Weatherly will have a question and answer session on songwriting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Neil White<\/strong>\u00a0operates a publishing company, writes plays and essays, and teaches memoir writing.\u00a0His memoir,\u00a0In the Sanctuary of Outcasts<\/em>, is about the year he lived with the last victims of leprosy in the continental United States. Barnes & Noble honored White as one of the top three emerging nonfiction authors in America through their \u201cDiscover Great New Writers\u201d program.\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n

\"JulieCantrell\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Julie Cantrell<\/strong>, a\u00a0New York Times<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0USA Today<\/em>\u00a0bestselling author, is the author of two children\u2019s books as well as\u00a0Into the Free<\/em>, which received Christy Awards for Best Debut Novel and Book of the Year 2013 as well as the Mississippi Library Association\u2019s Fiction Award. Cantrell\u2019s sophomore novel,\u00a0When Mountains Move<\/em>, is the sequel. Since its release in 2013, it has been named a 2013 Best Read by LifeWay, and won the 2014 Carol Award for Historical Fiction.\u00a0The Feathered Bone<\/em>, Cantrell’s third novel, was released in January.\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n

Jim Weatherly\u00a0<\/strong>was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York in 2014, the highest honor a songwriter can receive. Jim was an All-SEC quarterback at the University of Mississippi. Jim\u2019s most recognizable songs were recorded by\u00a0Gladys Knight and the Pips<\/strong>, including \u201cMidnight\u00a0Train to Georgia.” Jim was ASCAP’s Country Songwriter of the Year in 1974 and was later inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame.<\/span><\/p>\n
