Clink of ice cubes colliding
\nwith frosted glasses.
\nNotes of some old song I knew intimately
\nbut couldn\u2019t place.
\nGrass, mid-summer green, bent
\nover with the weight of droplets
\nspraying from a hidden sprinkler.
\nShe splashed me when she hit the cool
\naqua of the pool, her bulky body
\ngraceful somehow.
\nShe could float on her back for hours,
\nshe could even sleep that way,
\narms and legs spread,
\na starfish in a black tank suit.
\nHer phone rang, vibrating
\nthe glass topped table.
\nShe answered it dripping wet,
\nin the middle
\nof a story she was telling me.
\nShe spoke briefly before hanging up.
\nShe said, I haven\u2019t talked to<\/em>
\n her in twenty years,<\/em>
\n but I have company. I\u2019ll call her back.<\/em>
\nShe winked at me and laughed,
\na deep laugh,
\na smoker\u2019s laugh.
\nShe died suddenly a few months later.
\nI smashed things while sobbing, an act
\nof grieving that she would
\nhave scoffed at.
\nShe hated dramatics.
\nBut I have this day frozen, crystalline,
\nand I still wonder if she ever called
