Oxford\u2019s hard rock three-piece and local favorite new band winner, Carlos Danger<\/strong>, came by The Local Voice<\/em><\/strong> office to discuss recording the Return of Carlos Danger<\/strong> <\/em>EP, bringing a heavier sound to Oxford<\/strong>, and meeting a raccoon at a bar.<\/span>
\nThe three-piece (consisting of Lee Ingram<\/strong> on drums, Reid Haynie<\/strong> on bass, and Alex Thiel<\/strong> on guitar\/vocals) formed just short of a year ago in February and hit the ground running, booking a show for March.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone talks about getting a band started, but the best way to do it is to get something ahead of you,\u201d said Ingram.<\/span>
\nUsing that principle, the band went into Tweed Studios<\/strong> ready to record their EP with Andrew Ratcliffe<\/strong>.<\/span>
\n\u201cYou walk in and it\u2019s like \u2018Oh, okay. We gotta be good now,\u2019\u201d said Thiel.<\/span>
\n\u201cIt kinda hits you in the face,\u201d said Ingram. \u201cIt\u2019s a heavenly place.\u201d<\/span>
\nThe band came in with a list of songs much longer than what made it to the EP.<\/span>
\n\u201cWe had 15 [songs] when we went in,\u201d said Haynie. \u201cWe only recorded five.\u201d<\/span>
\nRecording Return of Carlos Danger was a quick process, taking three days from start to finish, with knowledge of Ratcliffe and the band well prepared. <\/span>
\n\u201cThat was really beneficial, going into the studio not to experiment, but to get work done,\u201d said Haynie. \u201cWe knocked it out in three days.\u201d<\/span>
\n\u201cWe liked working with Andrew a lot,\u201d said Thiel.<\/span>
\n
\nThe band scheduled four shows in January that started on the 11th at Jackson\u2019s Big Sleepy\u2019s<\/strong> and ends with them returning to Jackson to play Offbeat<\/strong> on the 30th. <\/span>
\nIn between they go on with Oxford band Reels<\/strong> at Proud Larry’s <\/strong>on the 22nd and at Hattiesburg<\/strong>\u2019s Thirsty Hippo<\/strong> on the 23rd.<\/span>
\n\u201cWe\u2019re not really doing a tour,\u201d said Thiel. \u201cWe happened to get a big string of Mississippi shows together not necessarily in support of the EP, but more like, \u2018we have some merch, we have some material, let\u2019s do it now before everyone gets too busy\u2019.\u201d<\/span>
\nCarlos Danger has a show scheduled the first day of Ole Miss\u2019<\/strong> Spring Break that it hopes to springboard into spending more time playing on the road during break.<\/span>
\n\u201cI\u2019m all about a spring break tour and playing more out of town,\u201d said Ingram \u201cWe\u2019ve played out of town shows, but never a formalized tour.\u201d<\/span>

\nTalking about playing out of town reminded the band of its most interesting show thus far, playing a CD release party in Hot Springs, Arkansas<\/strong>. <\/span>\u201cIt\u2019s literally a series of hot springs down the middle of the main boulevard,\u201d said Thiel. \u201cWe really had no idea what to expect.\u201d <\/span>
\nDespite the crowd not filling out until later in the night, Carlos Danger was won over the by the small town\u2019s locals.<\/span>
\n\u201cThere was a guy with a pet raccoon that would steal people\u2019s beers out on the balcony,\u201d said Thiel. \u201cHe\u2019d grab your beer and it would look like little human hands. Then he\u2019d just drop it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Being the only ones caught off guard, the raccoon was seemingly a regular at the local watering hole.<\/span>
\n\u201cHe had it in an open backpack that would be, like, his back eyes,\u201d said Ingram.<\/span>
\n\u201cThe bartender said he\u2019s there with his raccoon all the time,\u201d said Haynie.<\/span>
\n\u201cApparently that\u2019s just the townies of Hot Springs,\u201d said Thiel.<\/span>

\nAs with any new project, the band was unsure how Oxford would receive their heavier approach to music. Since starting nearly a year ago, the crowds have been \u201cpleasantly surprised,\u201d said Ingram. <\/span>
\nPulling inspiration from Ingram\u2019s jam influence and the band\u2019s collective love for metal and hard rock, Carlos Danger is hoping to fill what has become something of a void in regards to heavy music in town.<\/span>
\n\u201cI thought about this the other day, I wish more people listened to metal,\u201d said Ingram. \u201cMaybe we can be a gateway drug for that.<\/span>
\n\u201cI feel like people are making heavier or darker music [in Oxford] recently,\u201d said Thiel. \u201cWhit [Hamilton]<\/strong>\u2019s doing much the same thing with Midnight Fistfight<\/strong>.\u201d<\/span>
\nThe band has its breath held, waiting to see how their show with Reels goes before saying where Oxford show goers hold them.<\/span>
