Perhaps one of the greatest albums in Misra Records\u2019 canon, Water Liars<\/strong>\u2019 debut was entirely unplanned. Recorded on a whim, with one microphone, the then unnamed rock band\u2014consisting of St. Louis songwriter, vocalist, guitarist Justin Kinkel-Schuster<\/strong> and Oxford, Miss. drummer, producer, multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bryant<\/strong>\u2014casually convened to play and record. <\/span><\/p>\n

Over the course of three days, in the small milltown of Pittsboro, Miss., a series of ineffable and magical recordings came together. It was one of those seemingly providential experiences\u2014far too remarkable to be denied. Phantom Limb<\/strong><\/em> was born. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Paste, Pop Matters, Daytrotter, KEXP<\/em>, and more have all hailed Justin Kinkel-Schuster<\/strong> during his tenure fronting independent rock act Theodore<\/strong>. Some time back, Misra planned to work with Theodore and, assuming the songs were mere outtakes under a different moniker, the Water Liars<\/strong> demos initially got pushed to the back burner. Kinkel-Schuster<\/strong> pleasantly persisted; however, insisting the project was vastly different and must be heard. <\/span><\/p>\n

Upon first listen, it was very clear that\u00a0something truly remarkable really had occurred in the Phantom Limb<\/strong><\/em> sessions. Misra signed the band on the spot. Home to groundbreaking debuts by Shearwater<\/strong>, Great Lake Swimmers<\/strong>, and more, the label is excited to extend this tradition with Water Liars<\/strong>. <\/span>
\nAfter its sludgy intro, album opener \u201c$100\u201d blossoms into a weary, folk-pop gem. \u201cDog Eaten,\u201d a gorgeous acoustic number highlighting Kinkel-Schuster<\/strong>\u2019s inimitable voice\u2014a trademark that earned him \u201cBest Vocalist\u201d via St. Louis main rag The Riverfront Times<\/em>\u2014immediately follows. Through its ten-song set, Phantom Limb<\/strong><\/em> continues on this unpredictable path\u2014wavering from fast to slow, loud to quiet, but never once losing its magnetism. <\/span><\/p>\n

Songs like \u201cWhoa Back,\u201d \u201cRest,\u201d and \u201cFresh Hell\u201d captivate the listener until \u201cOn the Day,\u201d a celestial, melancholic track about one\u2019s deathday, closes the album and an inadvertent field recording is heard in the background. It\u2019s a beautiful, fortuitous ending to Water Liars<\/strong>\u2019 beautiful, fortuitous debut.<\/span><\/p>\n
