There has been, however, a surprising lack of bars, restaurants, or coffee options in the immediate vicinity.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> This is all set to change this week with the opening of <strong>Shelter<\/strong> on Van Buren, a hybrid-service establishment that will seek to fill a void that downtown Oxford\u2019s been missing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/image1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-30327\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30327\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/image1.jpg?resize=600%2C450\" alt=\"image1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/image1.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/image1.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> <strong>Lee<\/strong> and <strong>Teri Bowie<\/strong>, co-owners and operators of <strong>Cups<\/strong> on Jackson Avenue, got the idea to open up their new business on the Square when they found that the basement of Neilson\u2019s\u2014once home to the children\u2019s department\u2014was sitting vacant below the main store. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> \u201cWe started thinking [that] we like Cups coffee, but we wanted to have a larger venue,\u201d explains Lee. \u201cSome people think of our coffee as craft coffee, and we kind of like the idea of putting that together with craft beer.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> \u201cWe approached Mr. Lewis here at Neilson\u2019s when I saw<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> that this place was vacant a year ago, and [weren\u2019t] really sure if they wanted to have something like that. And it turns out they did. So it was a great fit for us and for them.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> For years, the basement of Neilson\u2019s was used as a literal shelter when severe weather threatened downtown Oxford. Though the space may still be suited for such a purpose (as it was during the storm that caused severe damage in Holly Springs just weeks ago, according to Teri), Shelter on Van Buren aims to provide a different sort of refuge from the hustle and bustle of the Oxford Square above.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/image2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-30328\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-30328\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/image2.jpg?resize=600%2C450\" alt=\"image2\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/image2.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/image2.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>Shelter will feature craft beers\u2014all draught\u2014from four Mississippi breweries (Crooked Letter, Lucky Town, Southern Prohibition, and Yalobusha) as well as Wiseacre from Memphis. However, before they can sell beer in Oxford,\u00a0 Shelter still needs to acquire a full ABC license, which means featuring a fully-functioning kitchen.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> \u201cI really liked the idea of doing desserts. I kind of thought that fit in with doing coffee,\u201d says Lee. \u201cIt turns out that <strong>Ron Shapiro<\/strong>, who had The Main Squeeze and The Hoka, used to have cheesecake and fudge pie at those places. We invited Ron to come in and contribute his ideas and his experience to what we were doing.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> In addition, Shelter will feature a limited selection of wines, as well as some spirits for coffee drinks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The food menu will feature wraps, paninis, and salads, but will also feature some southwestern fare. The breakfast menu (served daily from 7\u201310 am) will include Ron Shapiro\u2019s huevos rancheros, breakfast tacos\/burritos, and migas.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> The involvement of established Oxford faces and places should draw a crowd for food and drinks at any hour of the day. The Bowies are quick, however, to clarify that Shelter will be about more than their menu.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> \u201cOne thing we\u2019ve kind of talked through is that we want this to be a gathering place for conversation, for music, for film, for art,\u201d says Teri. \u201cSo we\u2019re not here to be an internet cafe or a coffee shop, but we are here for community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_9003.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-30329\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30329\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_9003.jpg?resize=600%2C450\" alt=\"IMG_9003\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_9003.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_9003.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> Shelter will play host to two blocks of the <strong>Oxford Film Festival<\/strong> in February, and plans are in place for <strong>Theatre Oxford<\/strong> to host some readings in the space. There will also be live music featured regularly. The Bowies say that they are working further with Yoknapatawpha Arts Council to expand the use of the space and to further integrate the arts community.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> That\u2019s not to say, however, that the Bowies aren\u2019t taking advantage of some new food and beverage opportunities.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> \u201cOne of the things <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">we\u2019re excited to bring to Oxford is coldbrew coffee served on draught,\u201d says Lee. \u201cOur nitro coldbrew, we\u2019re real excited about that. It\u2019s really smooth.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"> Shelter on Van Buren will be open daily starting January 4th, serving a limited food menu as well as Cups\u2019s coffee menu.
