Becoming a member of the GSA seems like a good way to start. According to their website, the GSA is a \u201cstudent organization that provides advocacy and education for individuals in the University and Oxford communities, as well as works to increase tolerance and respect for individuals of all sexual orientations and identities.\u201d You can also sign up to join a listserv that \u201csends out messages regarding all of the LGBT happenings in the Lafayette-Oxford-University community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000; font-size: 16px;\"><strong><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3032\" title=\"mid south pride logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/mid-south-pride-logo.jpg?resize=300%2C98\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"98\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/mid-south-pride-logo.jpg?resize=300%2C98&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/mid-south-pride-logo.jpg?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Mid-South Pride is held annually in Memphis.<\/strong><\/span> <strong>This year it will be held on <\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>October 6th<\/strong><\/span>, at Robert Church Park and in the Beale Street Entertainment District. This event is growing in size every year\u2014last year they reported the largest parade turnout in its history. During the day in the park you can walk tree lined sidewalks and check out booths that offer information on gay friendly churches, the Memphis Gay &amp; Lesbian Center, food, and Pride apparel. They also consistently offer a diverse and fantastic musical line-up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3033\" title=\"national_coming_out_day\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/national_coming_out_day.jpg?resize=279%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"279\" height=\"300\" \/>Ole Miss usually has a few events on campus to celebrate <span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #bc38b1;\"><strong>National Coming Out Day<\/strong><\/span> which is observed on <span style=\"color: #bc38b1;\"><strong>October 11th<\/strong><\/span>. I went one year to hear <strong>Candace Gingrich<\/strong>, sister of <strong>Newt<\/strong>, speak about equality at the Paris-Yates Chapel. The turnout was impressive and I was happy to meet so many like-minded folks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif;\">For those who consider themselves spiritual and are looking for a church that supports diversity, I suggest you visit the <span style=\"color: #e68719; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Unitarian Church of Oxford<\/strong><\/span>. From their website: \u201cWe are a caring intergenerational community that celebrates diversity and fosters spiritual growth through free thought and discussion with respect for personal beliefs. We seek the wisdom of many religious traditions and of ourselves, and we encourage the expression of personal ideals in service to people, other life, and our planet.\u201d The church became official in 1997. Members purchased an old church and some land at <span style=\"color: #e68719;\"><strong>31 County Road 198<\/strong><\/span> in 2001 and began holding services there after renovations were completed in 2003.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3031\" title=\"100_1971\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/100_1971.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/100_1971.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/100_1971.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Oxford also has its own chapter of <span style=\"color: #2c12ec; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG)<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 PFLAG was founded in 1973 by mothers and fathers of gays and lesbians. Their three point mission statement explains that their goal is to offer: <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Support:<\/span> to cope with an adverse society<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Education:<\/span> to enlighten an ill-informed public<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Advocacy:<\/span> to end discrimination and to secure equal civil rights.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif;\">Oxford chapter meetings are held the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7 pm at the Sarah Isom Center on campus (call 662-801-2820 for more information).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif; color: #83207b;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Memphis<\/span><\/strong> has a few hot spots if you\u2019re in the mood for some nightlife. <strong><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif; color: #83207b;\"><strong>Club Spectrum<\/strong>, located at 616 Marshall Ave., has two dance floors, is known to employ popular DJs, and hosts frequent theme parties designed to bring folks in and get them dancing. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif; color: #83207b;\"> <strong>Dru\u2019s Place<\/strong>, located at 1474 Madison Ave., is a neighborhood bar with a relaxed, casual atmosphere. They have a big patio, host karaoke nights weekly, and they offer pool, darts, and live music. They are a beer bar, but you can bring your own liquor and they will provide you with set ups.\u00a0 The service is friendly and they go out of their way to make you comfortable.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif; color: #83207b;\"> For a sophisticated, upscale experience in a lounge complete with a martini menu and jazz piano players, visit <strong>Molly Fontaine\u2019s<\/strong> at 679 Adams Ave. Located in a renovated three-story Victorian mansion, Molly Fontaine\u2019s is a fusion of past and present and the d\u00e9cor is extraordinary. The food is also notable; mussels, dumplings, truffle fries, and delicious mac and cheese. The clientele is eclectic and rumor has it there are happy hours geared towards different groups of folks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif;\">There are many ways to get involved in the Oxford area.
