Unless they were dropping nickels in a juke box, others had to make do with a\u00a0simple record player.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">Written by <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Eddie Cooley<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Otis Blackwell<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"> (who took a pseudonym on the gig and wrote \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Return to Sender<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">\u201d for <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Elvis<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">), &#8220;Fever&#8221;\u00a0was made most famous by <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Peggy Lee<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"> in a 1958\u00a0crossover\u00a0cover for <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Capitol<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">The song has been covered by everyone from the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>King of Rock and Roll<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Madonna<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"> t0 the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>McCoys<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"> (of \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Hang On, Sloopy<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">\u201d bubblegum fame) but those who know where the bodies are buried have no doubt who owns the tune. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">For me, it&#8217;s all about the rawness of the vocal on Little Willie John&#8217;s version,\u201d said <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Ron Sheehan<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">, 50, a guitarist and bass player living in <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Charlotte, North Carolina<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"> and a former <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Hyde Park<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>New York<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"> DJ [WHVW-FM] who often played LWJ\u2019s version of \u201cFever\u201d on the King label. <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/LWJ-one.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-29840\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"608\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29840 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/LWJ-one.jpg?resize=600%2C608\" alt=\"LWJ one\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/LWJ-one.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/LWJ-one.jpg?resize=296%2C300&amp;ssl=1 296w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/LWJ-one.jpg?resize=50%2C50&amp;ssl=1 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">Peggy Lee\u2019s take was \u2018flirty,\u2019\u201d said Sheehan, stopping short of dumping Lee in the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Pat Boone<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"> bin, \u201cbut Little Willie John&#8217;s was a true \u2018cautionary\u2019 tale of the relationship between a man and woman.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">And ain\u2019t that the blues?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">-o- <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">The blues that Little Willie\u2019s son &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Kevin John<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"> of suburban Detroit &#8211; has been singing accompany the struggle to have his father\u2019s short and dramatic life brought to the big screen.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">In 2011, Kevin assisted Detroit journalist and former <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><i><b>CREEM<\/b><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b> magazine<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"> editor <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Susan Whitall<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"> with an authorized biography titled <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><i><b>Fever: Little Willie John\u2019s Fast Life, Mysterious Death and the Birth of Soul<\/b><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><i>.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">Willie John\u2019s fast and often angry life lasted 30 years until his death in 1968 at a penitentiary in <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Walla Walla, Washington<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"> where he was serving a sentence for manslaughter. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The mystery surrounding his death pivots on whether he succumbed to pneumonia, a heart attack or something more odious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">And the deep-throated soul he sang (thus described in his 1996 induction into the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Rock and Roll Hall of Fame<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">) came out of the harsh blue birth canals of his native Arkansas before mixing with the horns and smoother R&amp;B vocals of the industrial north.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">Early in his career, the Godfather of Soul \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>James Brown<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">, Soul Brother Number One \u2013 opened some shows for Little Willie John. The same year as his friend\u2019s death, Brown released a tribute album called <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><i><b>Thinking about Little Willie John&#8230; and a Few Nice Things<\/b><\/i><\/span><i> <\/i><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">on King, the same label that had released LWJ\u2019s 45 rpm of \u201cFever.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">And perhaps Ms. Morrison listened to that album (she was 37 in 1968, I have no clue to her listening habits) just as Milkman Dead very likely grooved to Little Willie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">Good novels, Morrison has said, should <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\">&#8220;clarify the roles that have become obscured . . . and they ought to give nourishment.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A major motion picture about Little Willie John \u2013 nourished with the good, the bad, deep blue notes and ringing joy \u2013 could clarify the life of a haunted man long obscured by greater fame others achieved in his own backyard. <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14544\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"16\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14544\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/TheLocalVoiceLigature-25web.jpg?resize=25%2C16\" alt=\"The Local Voice Ligature\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><i><b>Rafael Alvarez is the author of <\/b><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><b>Crabtown, USA<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Galliard BT,serif;\"><i><b>, a collection of essays.
